"The Last Kind - Hostile Takeover"

If you're a fan of West Coast hip hop, chances are you have heard of The Last Kind or LK as their fans affectionately call them. This multi-ethnic quintet has been putting it down since 1990, when masterminds Maja Clout and Derek Strong formed the group. The intention was simple, "Make the type of raw ass hip hop we love but can't buy"--- and that's just what they've been doing ever since. Prop and R-Diggy aka Mega Lawge joined the group in 1995, while Knowledge Creative was added in 2001 to solidify the line up.
Staples of the L.A. underground since their inception in 1990, many have described The Last Kind as old school professors with a new school sound. They offer a thought provoking brand of hip hop with hyped production that fans have come to expect. They drop subliminal game which most listeners don't catch the first time around. LK describes themselves as true artist who have never allowed trendy influences to affect the type of music they make. This dynamic has afforded the group opening slots with some of hip hop's biggest acts {including Wu Tang Clan, Notorious BIG, Jurassic 5, Dilated Peoples, Planet Asia, Mos Def, De La Soul, Click Da super latin, and many others. Their live engagements have taken them to Japan, Germany, and across, the United States. Notable performances include K-Day Performing Arts tour, L.A.'s Project Blowed, The Good Life, and numerous, radio performances.

Early leaks of the group LP have pointed to the group diversity, highlighted by their original and distinct deliveries. Many credit the groups bi-coastal origin as one of the key ingredients to their sound. Maja Clout and Prop both hail from the Bronx, while Mega Lawge and Derek Strong come from L.A. As Knowledge Creative hails from New Jersey. It is easy to see how the groups varied background may be a key ingredient to their style! Last Kind's goal and purpose is to make good creative music that people will come to love and appreciate!

The Last Kind recently released their debut album "Revelations" on Stray Records. Unfortunately, shady label business and bad promotion led to The Last Kind parting ways with Stray Records. Now after resolving a few legal issues with Stray Records, the Last Kind are once again free agents and have recently finished up their 2nd LP. "Revelations"

"Aidding & abetting.com/ Reviewed in issue #208, 11/20/00"

The Last Kind creates its backing tracks through the collage method (a la the Bomb Squad), but the rapping style is more modern. The mix is rather intoxicating

What's also impressive (to me) is the political nature of the lyrics. The Last Kind is not only out to promote its revelations, but to spur a little revolution as well. A revolution of the mind, as opposed to one in the streets, but that approach is innovative and exciting.

But you don't have to pay attention to what's being rhymed if you don't want to. These songs sound great all by themselves. It's pretty rare to find similar levels of musical and lyrical sophistication on the same album, but here both impress.

Not the sort of album that burns up the charts, I guess, but it sure does blister the mind. The Last Kind seems more interested in advancing ideas than increasing personal fame. Hey, I'm all for that sort of sacrifice. I just wish it wasn't necessary.
