Leah Hunter
Folk Roots, Pop Flowers
The roots and journey of Leah Hunter are unmistakably reflected in the 10 songs to be found and enjoyed on her first full-length LP, Broken Flowers. Her soaring alto is commanding yet warm and inviting, much like her parents’ native Cape Breton. The songs are lush and rolling, almost meditative, evoking the spirit of Nova Scotia’s Annapolis Valley where Leah was raised. In her pop sensibilities, harmonies, and gospel and spiritual influences, one hears her decade-plus in Toronto; during which she has worked with a diverse range of pop, folk, experimental and jazz artists, and pursued postgraduate studies in theology at the University of Toronto. The overall result is distinctly personal and meaningful pop-folk music that promises to resonate with fans of artists such as Neko Case, Lucinda Williams, Grace Potter and Serena Ryder.
Leah has performed and recorded with bands such as: Ohbijou, Entire Cities, and Loitering Heroes (experimental-pop); The Jessica Stuart Few (pop-world-jazz), Your Heart (pop), and Zoe Theissen (folk); and Their Shallow Valley (pop-country). Her first recording, The Painter -- a low-fi folk gem recorded mostly in her kitchen -- was released as a split EP with her husband Trent in September 2008.
Broken Flowers, the new album by Leah Hunter, is now available both digitally and on vinyl.
