The whole thing starts with the word "and" as you're hearing the next chapter in a continuing story, and it pulls you in. Being in the middle of something while the curtain rises on your first CD may seem like a less-than-snappy entr'acte for opening night, but in the case of the Listening Group, who celebrate a record release this Friday at Michele's, the device intrigues rather than repels.
After all, the Listening Group are, in many ways, the next chapter in a continuing story. The collective members have all played leading roles in the North Bay's blockbuster bands (Schoolbox, the Conspiracy, Cropduster), along with bit parts in smaller local acts (Glass Babble Radio, the Louies). Now, with the christening of the Listening Group and the release of Belated (Grayscale), an all-star cast has finally assembled for the production of getting it right.
Pitch-perfect harmonies and rock-solid playing are natural outcomes from years of experience playing music; it's the frictional anthems of narcoleptic reticence and love's complacency that come from years of experience living life. All thrown together, this is the stuff that radio hits are made of, which would be a good thing as, judging from Belated's approximately 23 references to sleeping, the Listening Group could stand to quit the graveyard shift and get some shut-eye.

The Listening Group is a four-piece indie/ modern rock band from Northern California. More importantly they are a group of friends dedicated to playing music filled with passion honesty and emotion. Reminiscent of Hey Mercedes, No Knife, Braid, and Jawbreaker, The Listening Group bring their own independent sound and love for the road to their live performances and recordings. They have played with many great bands in 7 states including: Minus the Bear, Counterfit, Mock Orange, Sunday Driver, Communique, The Velvet Teen, The Ghost, Gratitude, Hanalei, The New Trust, Desert City Soundtrack and Benton Falls. The Listening Group completed a 4 song e.p. in early 2003 and went on a 5 state, 14 show tour in March of 2003. The Listening Group toured extensively on their 6 song "spalding e.p." in 2004. Their 7 song "belated e.p." is out now on Chicago record Label Grayscale Records. They just returned from a quick tour in the Pacific Northwest and plan to tour again in early 2006. While The Listening Group continues their quest to bring their music to all parts of the country, they hope to be in your town soon!
