Our new Juno nominated record 'Elements' now available on Vinyl, CD and online!

Biography

From their home port of St. John’s, Newfoundland, Long Distance Runners humbly explore new stereophonic territory with their latest and third release, Elements (October 9, 2015).

With Elements, the band confidently lays to tape its own hybrid alchemy of psychedelic, rock ’n roll, and country influences (Berlin-trilogy Bowie, Velvet Underground, Johnny Cash, The Rolling Stones). The album’s 11 memorable tracks are emotionally charged, with fog-drenched and sun-soaked songs about yearning, love and hope.

The Long Distance Runners have been embraced by the East Coast music scene since forming in 2009. With a recent Juno nomination, multiple MusicNL and ECMA nominations and several tours from Newfoundland to Ontario under their belt, the band is a veteran of the scene. They have performed with Wintersleep, Rich Aucoin, Gloryhound, Jim Cuddy Band, Said The Whale, Rah Rah, and the Newfoundland Symphony Orchestra, and their songs have been featured on CBC’s Republic of Doyle and CBS’s Golden Boy.

Lyrics

Credits Roll

Written By: Chris Picco

If you can dish it out honey baby I thought that you could take it
I was mistaken, I was naked I forgot the explanation
Well some folks say goodness comes to those who wait
But every time I get in line I'm told that I'm too late
I bought the ticket and I caught the show
But I never stuck around to watch the Credits Roll
Yah, the Credits Roll

N' when I met you I was smiling, happy with my problems
You wouldn't listen, you were talking, they never asked for solving
I catch your name my heart starts to sink
On down that city skyline pour me another drink
Well everybody's getting up to go
Before the bells been rung, before the Credits Roll
Yah, the Credits Roll
Roll

And when I left you, you were trying, trying to walk that high wire
And if there was a reason, now it escapes me
Anyways its not my problem
The knot is slipping and you hold your breathe
I turn myself around for the first exit
Well everybody's getting up to go
Before the curtain falls, before the Credits Roll
Yah, the Credits Roll
Roll

Black 'N Blue

Written By: Chris Picco/Matt Hender

Here's the story of a young man always thought the fool
Bad timing and a two-tone tan a little short in the tooth
Never thought about reading books or ever growing old
Just turned the dial to the late night station and dreamed of rock n' roll

Chorus:

And you know it's alright do what you do
Sway side to side, left to right, just be cool

Flashy Dan was a big man, thought he owned the town
Drove around in his fat Cadillac, his wife in a sequin gown
The young man wasn't blinded by their jewels or things
He'd just laugh and pump the gas with a nod and a wink

Chorus:

And you know its alright do what you do
Sway side to side, left to right, just be cool
And when it's time to fight stare 'em in the eye 'till they're black n' blue

Well time passed and the boy got smart so he started a band
Signed a deal on the dotted line, now he's his own name brand
Well all the girls got excited when he hit the stage
Even flashy Dan's wife in the sequin gown thinks he's all the rage

Chorus:

And you know it's alright do what you do
Sway side to side, left to right, just be cool
And when it's time to fight stare 'em in the eye 'till they're blank 'n blue

Black n' blue...

He Doesn't Stare Into The Sun No More

Written By: Chris Picco

Well he doesn't stare into the sun no more
That old feelings gone so he shuts the door and takes a piss
Counting wishes on his fingers 1,2,3 who's that person in the mirror looking back at me?
How did life get so tedious?

Well his father loved him 'till the age of seven when Mama ran into a tree and went to heaven
He woke up cold on a dirt floor with a river runnin' through
Papa said 'Son, it's up to you. You'd better not let me down Boy'

Chorus:
But the world keeps spinning around
That's one thing you can be sure of
Like the stars above
What goes up must surely come down

So he hit the city to see what he could see
Looking dapper as a king bee
He made a splash
With a charm and hustle that was hard to beat
Working his way to the top of the heap
At night his wife would pour him up a bubble-bath

Chorus

Well the kid's they think he's alright
He tries to be a good Dad
He wants to make them happy
He's love to see them smile

Oh but it don't matter no what he does
You can't buy loyalty, you can't buy love
Just do the math
Everybody wants to ride the gravy train, the sun is sinking and it looks like rain
You'd better let me off before we crash
Well he doesn't stare into the sun no more
That old feelings gone and he shuts the door and takes a piss
Oh

And he doesn't stare into the sun no more

You Gotta Remind Me

Written By: Chris Picco

Friends come, they go, that’s for sure
And the years pass by the door so slow
Except you
You always came through

I was knocked down
I was thrown out and left for dead
Where the hounds
Could bury my bones and make my bed
But I refuse
To be left where no one can find me
Thank God I’ve got you
To come and remind me

I don’t want to lose you

So wake up
And run your fingers through your hair
And shake off
All of the voices that you fear
And believe
You’re going to break free from this place
All you need is to keep your head on straight
Oh yah you gotta remind me
You gotta remind me
To where no one can find me
You gotta remind me

Pulling It Together

Written By: Chris Picco

I was pulling it together when you can around
I picked up all the pieces and I stood my ground
I tried to have it my way didn’t break no rules
At least the ones I had with you

I met her near the water beneath the northern sky
And laid me down satisfied
Nothing lasts forever I was such a fool
As I watched the waves wash over you

Come with me my ocean pearl
Leave behind this dying world

Now I’m in the city far above the earth
I’d give it all up for what it’s worth
I was pulling it together when you came around
Now I’m picking up the pieces trying to stand my ground

Come with me my ocean pearl
Leave behind this dying world

I was pulling it together when you came around
Now I’m picking up the pieces trying to stand my ground

When You Took The Sun Away

Written By: Chris Picco/ Andrew Strickland

I was feeling something beat inside when you took the sun away
I was hoping we could share the ride but not today
Everybody tells me ‘Son, be careful what you wish for’
‘You gotta watch out for number one’, and that’s for sure

So tell me what will I do when I’m losing you
Tell me what will I do

I was an easy target for your love I was just a kid then
And any hand that fit the glove you’d let them in
But now I’m feeling just about grown and I think I know a thing or two
Oh honey why’d you get so stoned I hate that shade of blue

So tell me what will I do when I’m losing
Ya tell me what will I do when I’m losing you

Darlin’ you ain’t all to blame I can feel those clouds above me
That pretty face ain’t showing no pain I hope you’re finally free
Yes I was feeling something beat inside when you took the sun away
Yes I was hoping we could share the ride but not today
But not today, not today, not today
Don’t go away

Rust Before We Shine

Written By: Matthew Hender/Chris Picco

Will we rust before we shine
Or will we crawl out of the dark
There’s such little precious time
Don’t ever lose the spark

We were promised at the start
That this love would never fade
But now we’re finding out its hard
To keep believing we’re the same

Will we rust before we shine
The wheels are turning faster
Keep the fires burning bright
Let the darkness wait till after

Will we rust before we shine
On that there is no answer
We can right these wrongs in time
And turn these tears to laughter

Ivory Towers

Written By: Chris Picco

Meet the feeble people now come down from your ivory towers
And greet the children there it’s so lovely when our love is shared
Don’t turn away from them they’d really appreciate you reaching out your hand
So take the time to show you care right now rise from your chairs you’ll see, believe

You may sip the finest wines above, it doesn’t matter we all share the same cup
And when push comes to shove, we don’t want it all we is love
Don’t turn away my friend before this life is spent
You’ll see, believe

When ivory towers come tumbling down and you find yourself amongst the crowd
Happiness will await you there beyond your walls and down your stairs
And now finally you will see that all you wanted was waiting there for free
You’ll see, believe

Meet the feeble people now come down from your ivory towers
And greet the children there its so lovely when our love is shared
