Biography

The Longing is an LA-based group whose upcoming release, “Bleed” transcends over-simplistic genre categorization. Founding member and singer, Laura Bradley, harnesses the power of her trademark angelic sound and unleashes her voice with the spectral force of an emotional whiplash as this powerful 13 track rock album spins out into groove-heavy pockets of distortion, atonal dissonance, high-octane hooks and the haunting piano melodies that are the signature of Bradley’s compositional style.

In addition to Laura, The Longing consists of guitarists Yuri Anisonyan and James Kloeppel, bassist Michael Wallace and drummer, Tom Plumb – all formally trained, seasoned session and touring musicians with numerous high-profile production and engineering credits. When asked about the title track, “Bleed” James replied, “I love the harmony, it’s really catchy and it’s got this weird overshadowing overtones/undertones – it is so NOT standard pop!” While the album is emotionally revealing, cohesion is heard in every note. “I think we’ve worked our way towards creating a dynamic that is perfect,” adds Yuri. “This band has a sound, and everyone just gets better. We’ve really started to trust each other.”
The stunning video for the single, “Bleed” was directed by Carmella Cardina, supervising producer of “The Green Room with Paul Provenza” on Showtime along with Bradley’s sister, Flint. Set in a neglected yet beautiful mansion, it traces the story of a woman lost in the history of the old house and its secrets. The imagery of the past and present collide within the memories of romance, intrigue and blood. Tom adds, “It was a great experience. The location was incredible, the whole process was really fun, creatively, and working it out together was amazing.”
The soul wrenching “Cool Dark Slip” opens with Bradley’s haunting solo piano before exploding into an urgency of hard-driven guitars. “All the songs are personal. It’s the only way I know how to write, but this is one the most achingly intimate songs on the album,” Bradley says. “This song simply penned itself. I had recently lost someone I loved to suicide and I was drowning in loss and anger. In order to find forgiveness, I took on the persona, the story of why, and faced the pain, her pain and what it was like to take her own life.”
The melodic and atmospheric, “This Flame” exposes Bradley’s experience with the Angeles National Forest Station fire that burned Bassist/Producer Michael Wallace’s Stonyville Cabin & Studios to the ground in 2010. “The fire took on a feminine identity and I hated her with all my heart. I speak directly to her in the song, telling her how she took from me a sense of safety and security. I had no power against her, and the change she was forcing upon me with her raging inferno. People like to think that the songs are always autobiographical when actually they are not. They are all very personal and meaningful to me, but I’m stepping into a persona as I am affected by a story, a confession, an event or the imagery of a situation. In the end, it’s always personal.”
Rounding out the release is the dramatic and expressive, “Sword & Stone”. “I loved writing Sword & Stone – it was originally commissioned by director Carmella Cardina for her film adaptation of Shakespeare’s play, The Tempest, and it became so much more than a movie theme for me. While I was writing about the dramatic journey of Prospero, the main character, and his transformation from rage and conviction into forgiveness, it broke open a place in me that had no concept of how to truly forgive and what forgiveness ultimately means. I don’t want to forgive you, is our nature. Do it anyway, is our higher calling. “
Bradley has toured nationally as a solo artist in support of her first two album projects, Rain and Storm (distributed by eOne), and became the opening act for both Colin Hay and Dionne Warwick & Friends at Miami’s Bank United Center. With the formation of The Longing, the group has performed at numerous rock venues with a unified vision and sound that electrifies an audience. Impressed by her playful theatrics and easy rapport with an enthusiastic crowd at The Viper Room, Music Connection Magazine reviewer, Lisa Elaine Scott writes, “Laura is an accomplished composer and a sophisticated performer. Her risk-taking lyrical story lines, combined with stellar musicianship and a spellbinding stage presence, make for an outstanding live show. Unafraid to stray from the familiar formula, Laura Bradley and The Longing are creating aural art at its best.”
With “Bleed” about to be released, The Longing’s thoughts have focused to returning to the road. Laura reveals, “I never meant for this to be a project four years in the making, but you have to be able to step away and give something space to grow. The end result is exactly what I’ve always wanted: A fourteen song epic release of dramatic and difficult subjects, propelled by the rich and hea

Lyrics

Bleed

Written By: Laura Bradley

I breathe, and
I bleed, they’re
One and the same
It’s my release

This wound
Steady and deep
Startling hope
When the cut is complete

What skin, must I shed
Exposing the beauty
Of this flesh
Beneath

Shimmering cool
Shimmering clean
I’m plunging in to
Where, I’ve never been

Chorus:
I breathe, and
I bleed, they’re
One and the same
It’s my release

I breathe, and
I bleed, it’s
Releasing all my
Secrets free

This pain
Crimson in stain
All I can do is
Respond again

Whisper to me
Of sinner and sin
Luring me back
To the battle within
Amnesty calls
I’ll abandon the game
What if that means
Another crimson stain

Chorus

Lips

Written By: Laura Bradley

Lips
If these lips should
Cease their tirade
Draw the poison back
Moments stung
Forever swollen
From the harsh attack

If these lips would
Hold their sorrow
Muted into place
From the stillness
Mercy beckons Quietly for grace

Chorus:
Take these lips and use my kiss Before I harm again
Take the skin I’m offering
And hold me down

If these lips
Should learn to trust in
Falling back to love From the slumber
Hunger wakens
To the heart above
If these lips
That I surrender
Whisper of regret
Melt this frozen
Mouth I offer
Risk the consequence

Chorus:
Take these lips and use my kiss Before I harm again
Take the skin I’m offering
And hold me down
Till I am safe
Till I am sound

Bridge: Tether me to where we suspended
I’m not convinced the story has ended
Of fragile walls and shifting ground The tapestry has come unwound And I can feel that this is coming down
All around me

Chorus

Come On

Written By: Laura Bradley

Come on

At the end of the show
When the curtain falls
I’m taking my cue
And I’m crawling the walls Wondering if you’re out there

At the end of the song
When I don’t hear a sound
I’m guessing you heard me
The first time around, But I’ll ask again
Am I getting through

At the end of the day
When I’m on my knees
Screaming for clarity
Here in the dark, where my faith has gone out
Is this what you wanted for me

Chorus:
Come on I can take another round
Did you think that this is all
It takes to bring me down

I’ve been wrestling
Demons in A wonderland of
All my doubts & fears
And now I’m so strong
Come on
Come on

At the end of the night
When my patience is gone
I’m working the ways
Of how it went wrong
Before I said goodbye

At the end of the round
When it’s over and done
You always remind me
That I’ve never won
But I’m ready now, try again

At the end of the fight
When I’m bloody and bruised
The armor is shattered, and I’m out of moves
Pinned to the floor, where my faith is no more
Is this what you wanted from me

Chorus

And now I’m here in the dark where my faith has gone out Is this what you wanted for me

Chorus

Cool Dark Slip

Written By: Laura Bradley

Sing, my love
Seduce me again
Tell me how
You think you knew me when

Slip beneath
The waves of our story
Words that finally
Tore me in two

Pre Chorus:
Low tide took my scream
I was silent, now I’m mute
Weigh the options carefully
The water’s calling you

Chorus:
If I could
I would
Easily let go

Spiral down
And all the fear
Is gone

Falling fast
Sliding into bliss
I have wondered all this time
How sweet the cool dark slip

A stronger girl
Would walk away
When she hit bone
She’d never stay, you see
The weaker girls’
Your heroine here
Conjuring the water
Screaming, please

Pre Chorus

Chorus

Bridge:
I guess I never knew you
And it’s doubtful you knew me Another day of silence
Choke the grief quiet
Till all I hear is the sea

Pre Chorus

Chorus

Dazed

Written By: Laura Bradley

Shocked and tired
Wounded and wired
Well aware I’ve no finesse

Stunned and amazed
Bewildered and crazed
Angry
Pulling away

I’ve got nothing to say
I’ve got nothing to say
I’ve got nothing to say

Pre Chorus:
Running As fast as I can
Anywhere
Away from the end

I am running
As fast as I can
Anywhere
Away from the end

Chorus:
Dazed at the way
We’ve come undone
Dazed that I lie on
Neutral ground

Dazed at the way
We’ve come
completely unwound
Dazed that I’m slowly
shutting down

Torn, distressed
Damaged I regret
Well aware
I can’t accept

Hushed and broken
Sorrow unspoken Grieving Pulling away

I’ve got nothing to say
I’ve got nothing to say
I’ve got nothing to say

Pre Chorus

Chorus

Not Anymore

Written By: Laura Bradley

Did you think I’d not remember
Did you think that I was blind
Did you think I wasn’t waiting
For you to show up with an apology
It’ll all be better this time

I believed you’d find your way to me
And explain what you had done

Chorus:
Not anymore
You’re gone
And I have found a way to carry on Without you, Don’t come around

Not anymore
You are gone
And I have found a way to carry on Without you
Without you

Did you think it was a righteous world
Beautiful girl, it’s not always fair
Did you think that you could prey on her
With your wicked ways, thinking maybe
Nothing wrong was going on here

I believed you’d find your way to me
Remedy the damage done

Chorus *with alternate line And she has found a way to carry on

Bridge:
It’s finally good now
We’re finally free
And if you come around again You’re gonna have to get past me Not anymore
Not anymore

Chorus:
Not anymore
You’re gone
And we have found a way to carry on
Without you, don’t come around

Not anymore
You are gone
And we have found a way to carry on
Without you
Without you
