The long knives is a collective of diverse musicians and influences. Niall has been playing and writing songs for 20 years, passing through a variety of styles on the way. Beginning with the 'New Wave/post-punk' influences of bands like: The Gun Club, Echo and the Bunnymen, The Banshees, Bauhaus, The Triffids, The Dream Syndicate, The Birthday Party/Bad Seeds...TLKs have a gritty trashy 'rock'n'roll' edge. Secondly, TLKs have a rich seam of sixties psychedelia to them blending staples like The Stones and The Beatles, Hendrix, Cream, The Byrds, CSNY, with earlier bands like The Chocolate Watch Band, The Standells, The Troggs, The Leaves, Moby Grape...
Added to this (phew!) TLKs have a strong vein of (early)blues, jazz and funk.
Dom and Aidan are both trained jazz musicians and bring an intricate detail and complexity to the minimalism of Niall's punkrock-simple ways.
Finally, most recently, AND most importantly Carley and Lyds bring a break from the stagnant guitar/bass/drums format with a radical approach to harmony vocals. Instead of using a second guitarist live we decided to bring in the girls to sing the supplementary guitar lines with all of the effects normally applied to the guitars in the studio. The result has been a huge expansion of our textural pallette. From catchy doo-wap style sixties vocal riffs to psychedelic vocal washes with heavy delays, the girls have lifted us from being yet another accomplished guitar band to something unique and seductive on many levels.
Contemporary Musical touchstones for TLKs would be Calexico and dEUS.
