"Make Some Noise"

Oakland's Loyd Family Players (www.theloydfamilyplayers.com) are no purists. Beats and hooks from the band members' own diverse musical backgrounds have found their way into this bateria's boisterous repertoire. Nevertheless, the lineup of Brazilian surdos, snare drums, shakers, and bells still carries the distinctive thump of authentic samba at its craziest. Props go to the fiercest female percussion section around. - San Francisco Guardian

The Independent
San Francisco, CA
July 13, 2007

Leave it to San Francisco dance rock outfit Chow Nasty to conjure up a little raunchy voodoo for their Friday the Thirteenth album release bash. The packed bill featured lots of dazzle from local acts that seemed to pride themselves on energy and impact.
With a bullhorn in his hand and a bass drum slung around his shoulders, the bearded, beanie-wearing ring leader of The Loyd Family Players introduced his fourteen-member drum corps to the floor of The Independent. In scanty outfits coordinated in various combinations of red, white and black, The Loyd Family Players banged out forty minutes of thundering, samba-inspired percussion while The Heavenly States set up their props and gear onstage. They displayed the pageantry and volume of a marching band, minus brass, plus the frolicking, gyrating sexiness requisite of a group born at Burning Man.....

Bio

With members hailing from such exotic locales as England, Brazil, Rome, Peru, Antarctica, St. Louis, and Long Island, the Loyds are a foxy, unstoppable (and unstoppably foxy) dance machine. The troupe was hatched at the 1999 Burning Man festival, when Chico, CA residents Sean Corkery, Shane Gabbard, Roberta Blake, and Mike Wofchuck brought their Brazilian drums to the desert for the first time. The small group evolved into a larger one, performing under various names until the Loyd Family Players moniker was hatched. In 2005, the group's energy spilled out of the desert and made its way into the members' daily lives, with performances at festivals and venues throughout the San Francisco Bay Area. The Loyds now comprise drummers, shaker and bell players, and one very loud megaphone; the fifteen-to-twenty person coed percussion performance troupe swipes elements from hip-hop, dancehall, punk rock, drum n'bass, summer camp ... anything goes.
