The Lucky Odds

The Lucky Odds are a self-described “greasy rock ‘n’ roll band from San Antonio Texas.” I recently discovered their music online and wanted to share these bad boys with you!

Tell us about the band and its history?

J.D. – We’re The Lucky Odds from San Antonio, TX.
I responded to an ad Clay had put up online as I was getting ready to move from AZ to TX during the spring/summer of 2011. He was looking to put a rockabilly band together and I was looking to play rockabilly.

Once I moved we met up and got the ball rolling. After a brief false start we met up with Duane and things just took off from there.

How would you describe your sound to someone who has never heard it?

J.D. – Rockabilly/Rock-n-Roll. Rockabilly, with a bit more Rock than Billy. Or something like that.

Who makes up the band?

Clay – Drums & Vocals
Duane – Guitar & Vocals
J.D. – Bass & Vocals

Who are your influences?
Clay – A lot of 1950s rock-n-roll as well as The Clash, The Blasters, Rev. Horton Heat, Social Distortion, Carl Perkins and even some Mighty, Mighty Bosstones with some swing and traditional county thrown in for flavor.
J.D. – We like the Rock And the Roll.

What is the San Antonio scene like?

Clay - What’s cool about the SATX music scene is that we get a chance to play alongside some great bands that aren’t necessarily in our genre or style. But we all get along. It doesn’t matter if you’re a greaser, a skinhead, a punk, a metalhead; we just seem to have a healthy respect for what each of us is doing.

J.D. – People seem to knock the SATX music scene or think of it as only a metal town. Although there is plenty of that here there is also tons of other really great bands of all different genres.

Anything crazy or weird ever happen at shows?
Clay – One night we were loading out of a local watering hole and we were approached by a drunk girl claiming we were posers! Apparently we were not “rockabilly enough” for her. According to her (she’s an expert, I suppose) we didn’t drive the right kind of cars and our hair wasn’t slicked back enough. I don’t know about you, but loading drums, amps and instruments into a ’32 Ford is pretty tough. Anyway, she continues to rail on about this or that, the whole time we were just smiling, trying to be polite (we were raised with manners, mind you) and rolling our eyes. As she goes about her drunken way she says to her friend, “They were actually pretty good.” Some people.

J.D. – Don’t run the barriers off of 6th Street in Austin. The police don’t like that.

Got any upcoming shows you want to plug?
Clay – We are constantly working and we stay busy. Some notable shows coming up would be the Port Lavaca Bike & Car Show on May 11th, The 2nd Annual Rockabilly BBQ in Del Rio on May 25th, and The 2nd Annual South Texas Performance Open House in Victoria on September 28th. There’ll be plenty of shows in SATX and ATX throughout too. Just check out TheLuckyOdds.com for the latest schedule.

J.D. – Punk vs. Rockabilly 3 at Flamingo Cantina on Sunday, March 10 of course.
