"REWIND: INDIE WEEK 2012"

With a hop, bus and a rainy walk, I made my way over to the East Coast Showcase at the Underground Garage, sliding in the door mid-set for Halifax’s The Lucy Grays. Self-described as a blend of Arcade Fire and Modest Mouse, I’m happy to concur without the tweak of guilt that inevitably comes when violin=Arcade Fire for me. Off the top, let me say this: the sample Show Gopher had posted did not do this band justice. I wasn’t seeking to catch them at all, and am very glad I did. I even snagged their EP after the set. A groove-heavy rock with the flair of, say, Ashley MacIsaac, you really can’t go wrong with a band touting a song called “Zombies”.

"Georges Island makes concert debut"

"Lucy Grays took to the short stage under the striped canopy in the main fort’s grassy courtyard. Winners of Live 105’s Battle of the Bands, the Halifax sextet fit the bill rather well, playing violin-augmented indie pop with zest appropriate for an outdoor show under a perfect blue sky."

"A young, plucky ensemble with Hey Rosetta! influences, I was pleasantly surprised. They were humble but confident in their performance. I especially enjoyed “Zombies,” which was simply introduced as “a song about zombies.” How fun!"

"The Lucy Grays"

“They play a set of chilled music that is both jazzy and funky. The songs feature boppy bass runs, reggae style guitar riffs and hip-hop inspired keyboard runs set to danceable ‘boots & cats’ beats. The band’s drummer is also their lead singer and he does a terrific job. he had great pitch and sang with a lot of power and emotion while managing to keep the beats solid. The Lucy Grays are well worth catching if you like rock that emphasizes melody and dance-beats over heaviness.” - Isaac Thompson - Noisography

Bio

The Lucy Grays' newest EP, “When Pluto Was A Planet”, mixes sweet melodies with hard hitting, angst driven, introspective songs. A mix of Arcade Fire and Modest Mouse, this Halifax six-piece is energetic and gripping, melodic and haunting - their music creeps up to surprise you. Violin, harmonies, wailing synth, and gritty guitar pull you in, forming a choral, orchestrated sound that keeps you addicted.

The band is the end result of chance encounters, foggy basement apartments, random misadventures, and a genuine fascination with the oddities of life, all wrapped up in a musical package. The last year has lead them to amazing shows, including George’s Island opening for Ben Caplan & The Casual Smokers and Hey Rosetta! opening for Hey Ocean, two sets at Canada Indie Week in Toronto, and a Maritime tour booked through the Berserker Lion Music Collective. Not to mention playing with the likes of Willie Stratton, The Town Heroes, Three Sheet, and Jim Guthrie.

The Lucy Grays are now returning to the studio to begin work on a second release due in 2013.
