MacGillivray Brothers tune up for April Wine

The MacGillivray Brothers:
Luke & Tom MacGillivray, Ryan Malcolm.

'Playing in front of an audience is nothing new for brothers Luke and Tom
MacGillivray.

But performing at the upcoming Weir Rockin' outdoor concert, however brings
the live audience experience to a whole new level. When The MacGillivray
Brothers open for April Wine, they will be looking out at more than 2,000
faces.

"It's going to be amazing," Luke said. "It's hard to imagine."

The Sackville brothers say that after several band evolutions, including
their most recent outfit, Kaiko Green, which brought them some local
success, they've found the combination that will bring them even more
recognition.

Luke plays guitar, Tom plays bass and they both write and sing. Rounding
out the four-piece band is drummer Ryan Malcolm, and Joey King on lead
guitar.

All the band members are in their twenties, and although most of them
weren't even born when April Wine hit the scene, they are familiar with
their music, and believe their own music will be a good fit for the
concert.

"In the end, we play rock and roll," Luke said.

According to Tom, each member of the band has been influenced by different
types of music, including Weezer, The Beatles, Led Zeppelin and Sloan. The
variety of inspirations gives them a lot of material to work with.

Although they often play gigs at venues around town at bars like Big
Leagues and The Speak Easy, they spend as much time as possible together,
jamming and writing songs.

"We all have a part in writing," Luke said. "And although we do a few
covers, getting our original music out there is our priority."

Between playing, looking for management, booking and promoting, The
MacGillivray Brothers know they have a lot of work ahead of them. But right
now they have one goal in mind.

"We want to quit our day jobs," laughed Tom. Tom currently drives a
delivery truck, Luke is a shoe salesman, Malcolm stocks shelves, and King
is a cable guy.

The MacGillivray Brothers recently beat out 14 other bands to win battle of
the bands at Big Leagues in Dartmouth. Top prize was a chance to star in a
music video from Media Works Studio East. The video will mostly feature
live performance shots, culminating with the April Wine concert.

"We believe we have something to offer," said Luke. "We just need to keep
working at getting our stuff out there."
