Sometimes a set of circumstances works with the powers of the universe to put you in places where you should be. Today was one of those days. After the conclusion of this year’s Vancouver International Game Summit I was going to head home, but as it was the beginning of rush hour, I tuned into our local traffic radio station to check out the condition of the drive home, and upon hearing about all the accidents and back-ups in said traffic, I decided to make a stop at the VidFest happy hour over at the Granville Island Hotel and wait out the worst of it. I sat down at a table with Jodi Vetterl from Soft Image and realized that Janyse Jaud was also seated at the table. I had the pleasure of meeting Janyse at the recent ELAN awards, so was happy to have a chance to catch up with her, and she has been a very busy lady, indeed.
For those of you who may not know who Janyse is, I’m sure that you will be familiar with the characters she has given voice to - Cymbeline from the Bratz movie; Pinky Pie and Scooter Sprite from My Little Pony; Sarah and Lee Kanker from Ed, Edd n Eddy to name but only a few roles from her extensive resume Janyse is an amazing woman who has launched a new project utilizing her many talents for voice, song and music to help young children find courage, happiness and friendship. Inspired by her experience with the The Make A Wish Foundation through her role on Ed, Edd n Eddy and four young children with life-threatening illnesses, Janyse says that “it was then that I decided to create music and lyrics that would emphasize the power of positive thinking and provide people with hope and possibilities. It’s not about who someone was or is; it’s about who they can become.”
Janyse’s new endeavour is The Magic of Think, a “multi-media project created to enhance children’s self-esteem through music, animation and games. Kids can chat, play, sing and discover the secret to confidence, happiness and friendship with the help of animated avatars. Kids can then enter the real world with stronger self-esteem and success.” I listened to the new CD during my drive home. Three times. Then I had Scott listen to it once I got home. We both agree that the songs are fun and well-suited to Janyse’s target audience of kids aged 3 to 6. I think that some of the songs on the CD would even appeal to kids a little older. In fact, by the time I had listened to the complete CD the first time, I was easily seeing a stage show in my mind - if any of you have seen Les Miserables on stage, I think you will easily be able to relate “This Day Is Mine” to the mood set by Cossette’s solo “Castle On A Cloud”.
As a parent, I would have had no qualms whatsoever about my children listening to Janyse’s music when they were younger. Everything from the music to the voices she gives her characters is positive, and her lyrics carry messages which kids today need to hear. In fact, I would have dearly loved to have had this CD when Mike was going through his Barney phase. Even though Barney’s message was supposed to be positive, his methods of delivery drove me crazy.
Janyse’s music is very easy on the senses, and it is no wonder that both this CD and her previous Christmas CD, The Magic of Christmas have received high recognition from the entertainment industry. Both of these CDs have been included in the gift bags at the Grammy Awards, the Oscars, and most recently for the performers on this year’s A Home For Christmas annual benefit show produced by Steven Spielberg and Henry Winkler. Janyse is a very special lady, and I admire the path she has taken to support children and to help shape them into positive-thinking young people. She has even played a role in my son Mike’s life - by simply taking the time to talk to him about her voice-over career and then listening as he gave her a brief demonstration of one of his many characters. By taking the time to make him feel important, and by encouraging him along his chosen path, Janyse helped to give Mike the courage to take voice-over acting lessons and the confidence to begin searching out studios who may be looking for new talent. It is often a rare thing to find someone who is not only working to make our world a better place, but who practices it in all aspects of their life. Janyse is such a lady, and I wish her every success at VIDfest and with The Magic of Think - I will be looking forward to more news from her as this project moves forward.

Local performer Janyse Jaud, a singer, songwriter, actress and voice artist, will have her CDs The Magic of Think and The Magic of Christmas included in the official gift bags for the Everybody Wins at the Oscars promotion, presented to Official Nominees.

"The concept of The Magic of Think came from my experience with the Make-A-Wish Foundation,", Jaud told HNR.

Thank goodness for this CD. It’s the first children’s cd that didn’t drive me bonkers when listening to it in the car. I used it for a week every morning during my drive to child care. As you can imagine there are many mornings that tears are a reality – the cd was enough to snap my 1½ year old daughter out of her state. My 3 year old would tell me who was singing the songs – he related to the characters on the front of the cd. Although both of my children are too young to really get all the wonderful messages from the songs, the fact that he was trying to sing along and remembered the words made me feel good. I could not believe your CD "The Magic of Think" would be so wonderful for children. Listening to it, I laughed, cried, and tapped my foot to the rhythm. I then proceeded to purchase 1 for my granddaughter and 6 additional ones for her to give as presents to her friends. All parents, grandparents and day care should have this CD. Janyse's previous album "Magic of Christmas" touched my heart with its upbeat, sexy and jazzy Christmas tunes that light up the mood. This time around, she releases an album with a hidden meaning....
The Magic of Think is an inspirational album, that gives it's listeners not only the soothing sounds of Janyse's voice, but also courage, friendship and happiness. All three are the key element themes used in this album, which are fun to hear and sing along to.
Janyse's voice work as Little Red, Coochi Coo (my personal favorite) and Aldis is absolutely adorable. Each character has his/her own story to go along with the songs. It's all about positivity, and it's the right message for not only children, but adults.
The sound of the music is quite good, very country/pop dance-ish this time around, with (of course...) Janyse's perfect vocal work. In short, the sounds of the music and Janyse's vocals really complemented each other. Which make it a great experience!
The album is fun to sing along with, the lyrics are cute and VERY catchy! Boogie Oogie Man is stuck in my head, and I can't help but get up and groove to Best Friend Forever. Awesome beat this time around!

My 3 year old son loves this CD. We like to play it in the car although he will also put it on at home to dance around too. I enjoy the singing as well, which is not what I can say for all children's CD's. I also like the fact that the lyrics have a positive message. Kelowna-based singer/songwriter/voiceover actor Janyse Jaud has been living the well-deserved life of a Hollywood star these days. In front of some of Hollywood’s most famous music industry professionals, Janyse (her stage name) accepted her award for her latest pop single This Day Is Mine (Remix) at the Hollywood Music in Media Awards.

Janyse is still beaming from her recent trip to Los Angeles for the Awards, which honours both independent and professional musicians.

“I was just in L.A. for the awards and I was nominated in the jazz category. There were people there from England, Dubai… It was a real mix of independent and high profile people. It was a great opportunity for networking… I have three companies interested in my music now, and there’s an L.A. songwriter who I’m collaborating with right now (though I can’t say who). I was even able to get into the top voiceover agency in L.A. while I was there. I spent five days there and it was an amazing time.”

Strangely enough, her music award was for a remix of a song that was written for children.

“I won the award for This Day is Mine, the pop tune that was remixed. The original song is actually on my children’s album,” she says.

Janyse is proud to create music that not only makes people feel happy, but inspires and motivates as well.

“I combined my cartoon voices with my original music to help kids with their confidence. I decided to have it remixed to have it appeal to both kids and adults. It’s all about inspiration and motivation. I had so many parents tell me that they liked the songs and it made their kids feel good. I took it to these producers in Vancouver and told them what sound I wanted to have; something that Abbawould have created. I wanted to stay along the same lines but more of a dance club beat.”

Perhaps due to the motivational nature of her children’s CD, both of Janyse’s CDs found their way into the gift bags for both the Grammys and the Oscars last year, an accomplishment she downplays but is still proud of.


“Thousands of companies want to be chosen for the gift bags each year [in reality it’s probably tens of thousands]. I believe they were chosen because the children’s CD develops self esteem in a fun way.”

When the multi-talented artist isn’t here composing new material for a new selection of songs, she’s in Vancouver lending her voice to projects for clients like Disney, Paramount, Warner Brothers, Fox, Marvel, and MGM. Her voiceover work for a Discovery Channel documentary even led to an Emmy award. Not a bad resume for someone who still lives and works in Kelowna.

The foundation for Janyse’s extensive career was set at an early age, but she didn’t know where it would all lead.

“I started writing music when I was nine, got into band, and things snowballed from there. I knew what I wanted to do when I was four. I didn’t know that you could make a job from being a voiceover actor. As a kid I thought those characters were real.”

Her impressive list of cartoon voiceover work began with Conan The Adventurer. “It was my first job, and I played the heroine. When I do the gigs I usually go to Vancouver. Sometimes I can even do it here, recording it in my home studio and send it out to them. But usually they want you there.”

Choosing between her two loves – voiceover acting and music – is a choice she feels she doesn’t have to make.“I love both. When you’re in a studio doing voiceover work you get to play with these characters; one day you’re a villain, next day you’re a little girl, next day you’re a pony. It’s a very fun job. Songwriting and singing is just as rewarding so there’s no clear winner.”

When you hear actors who are famous for their voiceover work (like the voice cast of the Simpsons) claim that it’s the easiest job ever, you wonder if it’s really that easy.

“Is it easy or hard? It depends. Some actors come in and don’t know how to lift the words off the page properly,” she explains. “There is a craft to it. In voice over acting you get to become that character. When I’m Lady Death Strike in the Hulk, I take on that persona – the strength and the power. In My Little Pony it’s that cute innocent spirit of when you were four or five years old.
The singer came into voiceover work naturally. “I was always acting, singing and dancing. I was doing some on-camera work, and people told me I should do voiceovers. I did a demo tape and found that I could do it,” she says. Once she realized that she had the knack for it, Janyse decided to get serious with her training. “I studied with Ivana Chubbuck – she teaches Halle Berry and Charlize Theron. She is amazing. She just knows what to get out of people. She would come to Vancouver from L.A. to train me. I also studied others, and you learn a lot through others.”

On top of all her other achievements, Janyse has also done some work in front of the camera.
