Bio

the magnetic north was conceived in early April 2004 as by Mark Weiler (Formerly of Edge 102.1 New Rock Search Finalists 'Trigger', and Sextant recording artists, 'Ripped') as a vehicle for creating new and exciting music.

After a lifetime of playing traditional rock bands led by other people, Mark felt the need to take control of a new project that would allow him to flex his creative muscles. Mark knew that this project had to be a drastic departure from his previous bands and he wanted the sound to be reflective of his musical interests.

So...he began writing and recording and trying to develop the magnetic north's sound. After many false starts and plenty of songs that didn't quite fit 'the vision', Mark finally decided to strip the sound down, back to the roots. That is when the cd's tracks started to develop.

The idea was to start with a basic idea and then to build on that foundation by adding layers to create a wall of sound...but it still had to have room to breathe.

First came 'The Angle Between Us' and then ' The Desolation Coast' (which was actually developed from an idea that originated in an earlier session), 'Georgia Straights', ' On This Astral Plain' and 'Piano #3' (which evolved from #'s 1 and 2). Many of these tracks were inspired by the beauty and power of the Pacific Ocean and a trip through the Gulf Islands, off the Vancouver coast. The remainder of the albums 12 tracks originated during a summer relocation from Victoria to Halifax.

The music found on [the magnetic north] is simple yet powerful. From the gradual build up's to the sonic explosions, the magnetic north's debut cd takes hold of the listener and never let's go until the very last note has been sounded.
