"Ithaca After Dark: Makepeace Bros. come home for performance at Lost Dog"

ITHACA — Fresh off an east coast tour, the Makepeace Brothers return to their native Ithaca for a show at the Lost Dog Lounge at 10:30 tonight.

The band, which includes brothers Finian and Ciaran Makepeace along with bassist Conor Gaffney, is based in Los Angeles.

“We came down from San Francisco a year ago and just happened to meet the right people,” Finian Makepeace said. “Through friendship and music sharing, as well as promoting of similar ideas in terms of the consciousness we're trying to spread, we've been linking up with some amazing people who are doing similar things with us in terms of what they want to do with their music. So, it's been pretty much a blessing — the last year has been pretty explosive for us and pretty exciting.”

Part of that excitement stems from participation in April's “Music, Magic & Make Peace Tour,” a national tour headlined by singer-songwriter Jason Mraz, who scored a big hit a few years back with “The Remedy,” and also included magician Justin Kredible and singer-rapper Bushwalla.

“We're all friends, which was the coolest thing, so we were all on buses hanging out and always coming up with new ideas for the show every night,” Makepeace said. “It was basically a constant entertainment show. Even the people waiting in line were getting played to — we'd set up a sound system for the people who lined up in the afternoon for the show. Then we'd play inside later. The shows were almost always sold out — these were 1,000- to 2,000-seat venues — so we were getting good exposure.”

The band's current tour is “designed to hit all the east-coast places we played with Jason Mraz, to get back to those people who've become our new fans,” Makepeace said. “It's been a successful tour, and we're happy about it.”

The trio also toured the United Kingdom last month, playing 21 shows in 14 days.

Just before Mraz tour, the Makepeace Brothers recorded an 11-song CD to demonstrate their acoustic pop style. “We jumped in the studio and crammed out a CD in about five days,” Makepeace said. “We've been using it for people in the industry as well as new fans to get synched in with the music. And we're going into the studio this winter for a more major recording.”

The two other Makepeace brothers, Liam and Aidan, will join their siblings for tonight's show. DJ Cappel (Ian Gaffney, Conor's brother) will spin tunes to close out the night, making this a true family affair.

The Makepeace Brothers show follows Crossing Borders, which runs 8-10 p.m. and features GoGone. The local band, whose lineup includes songwriter R. Cooper and the Gaffneys' mother, Meryl Young, has just finished its first CD. Cover is $5. Visit www.crossingborderslive.org for more information.

"Night Life Agenda the Washington Post"

Saturday, Aug. 2, 2009
We all can get a little negative, cynical and snarky sometimes. (Only sometimes.) And it's good to know that not everyone is as hardened as us. Take the Makepeace Brothers (listen), a winsome family duo/trio/quartet that proves it's possible to be upbeat and positive without turning into some freaking Radio Disne-- whoops. There we go again. Sorry. Hailing from Ithaca, N.Y., the Makepeace boys play a clean, stripped down mix of folk, Americana and acoustic '60s-inflected rock and blue-eyed soul, pulling in elements of Simon and Garfunkel and Van Morrison, all the way up to Jack Johnson and Jason Mraz. (The Makepeaces just got off a nationwide tour with the latter.) Tight, gorgeous harmonies, nod-along guitar shuffles, even whistling -- the Makepeace Brothers do it all with smiles on their faces, while dropping advice on how to "Treat Her Right." (Hint: It's about playing and talking and listening, not just flowers and chocolates.) Yeah, okay, it's all very hippie for the aughties, but it comes across as completely sincere, which is something we could all use a lot more of. The Makepeace brothers take the stage at BloomBars, a new performance space in Columbia Heights, at 9 p.m. tonight. A $5 donation is requested to help the musicians keep the gas tank full and to help the venue pay its electric bill - Washington Post Arts and Living

Bio

The four Makepeace brothers have been called “The Everly Brothers squared” but their catchy harmonies are only part of their appeal. Aidan, Liam, Finian, and Ciaran Makepeace have gained world-wide attention because their songs move people to think, feel, and dance, with lyrics that are both witty and poignant, and which spread the message embodied in their surname – “make peace”.

Growing up in the vibrant music community of Ithaca, New York the brothers were exposed to all musical genres but their commitment to a life of music began during a year-long odyssey with their parents in a small Winnebago motorhome. That tour of the US gave them first hand experience with American Roots music and the musicians who play it, and that inspired the boys to begin writing and performing their own songs.

The brothers’ musical horizons were broadened further at Summer music festivals where they heard all forms of World Roots music, and from their own travels abroad when they lived in Costa Rica, Brazil, and England, immersing themselves in the music and rhythms of those cultures. After years of solo and ensemble projects, in 2007 the boys finally came together again to combine their musical visions and to create the unique sound of The Makepeace Brothers. Now, after release of two self-produced albums, and national tours with Grammy Award winner Jason Mraz, The Makepeace Brothers have a dedicated international fan-base that not only dances to their music but believes in their message as well.

The Makepeace Brothers band, which has always included longtime friend Conor Gaffney on bass, now incorporates various drummers and other accompanists, and their sound has evolved from an acoustic coffeehouse vibe into a full-throated stage band. Consequently, The Makepeace Brothers have been booking larger and larger shows, and the best is yet to come for this upbeat, uptempo, and politically conscious band of Brothers because their sweet harmonies and sincere, life-long message of peace, love, and justice are exactly what the world wants to hear right now.

"By the time you finish the CD or get to the end of the set, you feel like an honorary member of the Makepeace Family. They've somehow managed to leave a space in their music just for your own voice to sing along." - Jason Mraz

“The Makepeace Brothers are progenitors of roots-based power-pop, saturating their listeners with feel-good vibes and delightfully sing-along-friendly hooks. Having grown up at festivals, they’ve been bathed in just about every genre of music we can think of, and they bring these wildly diverse influences together for a sound all their own.” - Grassroots Festival of Music and Dance
