Some people are born musicians- and Marc Holyoak is one of those people. With 26 years onstage, this Montana farm-boy has been called the hardest-working musician on the West Coast by industry leaders.
Aside from his incredible ability to play guitar, bass, drums, and sing simultaneously, he is also a brilliant songwriter who has performed everywhere from Hawaii to Hollywood, with radio and news performances, and cameos in TV and film. He is known for his creative, unique projects that push limits, and blend extremes.
"I love playing in bands," says Marc. "I've been touring for most of my adult life... but in 2020, I had a lot of free time on my hands, so I put it to good use. I wanted to re-create the feeling of being onstage and having that full live sound by myself, so I started looking for a solution, and it turned out even better than I expected."
After some trial and error, he discovered he was able to play guitar with one hand, bass with the other, and drums with his feet. "It feels like I'm in a spaceship- or on a magic carpet, or something," he says. "I don't know if you can call it a band, per se- I call it a solo-trio," he smiles. "I named it The Markrophones, because it makes me laugh every time I say it, and I wanted to keep it fun."
There are no tricks or gimmicks at a Markrophones show- you experience everything happening in front of you, in real-time. His ability to coordinate every part leads to some very unique and expressive surprises, from subtle tempo changes and random audience interactions to sheer sonic chaos. Needless to say, attending a Markrophones show is an amazing spectacle, and the performance extends far beyond the musicianship. "Expect to be taken to realms you never imagined possible," he admonishes. "This will remind you what music is really all about."
The Markrophones have just released a new 5-song EP, 'Hot Phone Remarks', and music videos to accompany every song on the record. Marc is currently booking a national tour in 2022 and 2023, with hopes to perform in all 50 states by the end of the year.
"People are looking for something new and different right now. Everything around us is changing quickly, and we need to be able to innovate in order to thrive. I think innovation starts with dreams, then moves into artistic expression, and then outward into the practical world. I recognize my music to be a realization of my own dreams through artistic expression, and I hope this will inspire people to be creative, and to help them grow, so they can find new ways to build a better life for themselves."
Marc is a true free-spirit and entrepreneur. He has lived in Colorado, Montana, Hawaii, and Oregon, and has been a professional touring musician and recording artist for over 17 years. He is 36 years old, and travels the world with his dog, Bread Loaf.
