Bio

The Marvel Stove plays original acoustic songs. Leo McKay writes the tunes, plays guitar, banjo, rudimentary piano and sings the lead. Jim Bruce makes the songs sound like music by playing accordion, clarinet, piano, percussion, and by singing harmonies. Angela Dwyer-James holds down the low end with double bass and elevates the high end with vocal harmonies.

Formed three years ago in the village of Maitland, Hants County, Nova Scotia, the Marvel Stove has headlined at the Marigold Cultural Centre, organized independent multi-act musical shows, provided entertainment for several art shows, and played the Truro fundraiser circuit.

Most recently, the band has, through Dry Kindling Productions, opened a major show for banjo-slinging songster Old Man Luedecke.

Songwriter Leo McKay is also a fiction writer. He has published a collection of short stories and a novel. His fiction has won several prizes, and his first book was a finalist for the Giller Prize.

Multi-instrumentalist Jim Bruce lived a former musical life as the accordion player with Halifax based Polish Folk Dance group Pomorze.

Angela Dwyer James' musical life also includes teaching ukulele, singing in two choirs, and playing various bass gigs whenever she gets the chance, including two outfits under the direction of famed musician and educator Chalmers Doane.
