"The Michael Owcharuk Trio"

Bassist Nate Omdal and drummer Mike Hams accompany the talented, imaginative pianist Michael Owcharuk, a Cornish grad who cites as his influences a wide range of more-compelling jazzmen and figures from other arenas of music: Mingus, Monk, Shostakovich, Bach, Chopin, Shorter, Coltrane, Bill Evans, Hermeto Pascoal, Mozart, Zappa, John Lewis, Tool, The Talking Heads, Pink Floyd, Opeth, Metallica, Herbie Hancock, Mal Waldron, and many more. Born and raised in New York City, he leads this all-originals trio which has some of the excitement of discovery inn , say, the early work of Krzysztof Komeda. The echo of likeness stands to reason, because Owcharuk says he has been fascinated not just by jazz, but also by Ukrainian and Russian traditional and sacred music, classical music, Brazilian music, rock, gospel, blues, and contemporary art music. Well, which attentive music student hasn't been, in these days of vast access to recordings? But it's what a soul does with the influences... Like the Polish legend, Owcharuk has turned it to his own ends, with really captivating results. - Earshot Jazz, Seattle, WA

Bio

The members of The Michael Owcharuk Trio met while attending Cornish College of the Arts in Seattle, WA. After performing together as a rhythm section in a myriad of different situations, all three expressed the desire to perform original music that was fun, creative, challenging, and explored the possibilities of the piano trio. So, in the summer of 2006, this ensemble was formed. In year since, Michael, Nate and Mike cut their debut album and gigging hard, performing all throughout the Puget Sound Region and Washington State. They found that this music they were making spoke to a wide variety of audiences. From roadhouse dive bar to formal concert hall, people listened, enjoyed, and noticed it was something different. This was affirmed when The Michael Owcharuk Trio was invited to perform in the Earshot Jazz concert series "Jazz; the Second Century". The series presented the future of jazz in Seattle, showcasing artists who were exploring new ground.
