The Midnight Kites

 Englewood, Colorado, USA
BandAlternativePop

The Midnight Kites write inspired, hopeful songs that are full of beauty, intelligence, and emotion. Intelligent, ambient indie-pop songs that take a multi-dimensional look at life. Sounds like: The Cowboy Junkies mixed with The Shins and My Bloody Valentine.

Biography

Born out of the marriage of two songwriters, The Midnight Kites were formed when Jill and Bruce McDougall combined their creative energies.  Jill (vocals, guitar) brings pop melodies and catchy chord structures, Bruce (guitar, backing vocals) adds ambient textures and complex sonic color.  They are joined by Jill’s brother Connor DeFehr on bass. Together they create a thrilling musical mix, combining pop sensibilities similar to those of The Shins with the emotional power of groups like My Bloody Valentine and Sigur Ros, all carried by breathy female vocals reminiscent of The Cowboy Junkies.

The band’s songwriting is filled with imagery, and the songs are often characterized by surreal and dreamlike passages that capture life’s complexities in new and unique ways.  Both Jill and Bruce write songs about personal growth, challenges, life’s imperfections and it’s beauty, loneliness, relationships and, of course, love - after all, they are married!

In the summer of 2009 The Midnight Kites recorded their debut full-length album, “The Color of Light” at Notably Fine Audio in Denver.  The album was produced by renowned pedal-steel guitarist Sally Van Meter, and features Jen Gilleran on drums, Philip Parker on Cello, and Eric Moon on piano and keyboards.  Named for their song “The Color of Light,” the album is an exploration of shared human experience.  Its a dramatic and diverse album with a equal importance given to the sounds and to the spaces in between.  The notes, the songs and the album itself are given space to breathe, which allows Jill’s subtle, soothing voice to draw the listener in.  The album opens with the passionate pop anthem Green Eyes, and proceeds through an ambient indie-rock exploration of love and loneliness, personal growth, injustice, and mortality, and finally closes with Swimming Naked, a joyous reminder that above all else, life can and should be a wonderful ride.

My One Wish

Written By: The Midnight Kites

My secret wish only you knew
It was never a matter of me and you
All made up of deja vu's
Storms of anger, I love you's

Run the mile
Testify
Laugh until you cry
Say goodbye
Simplify
Laugh until you cry

A canopy of weeping birch
The shadows fall around the church
Rigid lines and crooked grins
Forgive my my indulgent sins

Run the mile
Testify
Laugh until you cry
Say goodbye
Simplify
Laugh until you cry

Green Eyes

Written By: The Midnight Kites

Green Eyes
not the color of your sins
are brighter every day
you've got a shimmer all your own
I've got eyes
in the back of my head
in the thick of the forest
looking for you

The sand and sky
collide in time
when love speaks
you open up your mind
this valley in warmer days
Earth and sky open up around me
the echoes that surround us
the shadows fall all around me and you

Blue eyes
reflect the colors of sunlight
on a day we're given to fly
through our dreams
I've got eyes
on you in the moonlight
ten thousand years go by
and I'll still be with you

The sand and sky
collide in time
when love speaks
you open up your mind
this valley in warmer days
Earth and sky open up around me
the echoes that surround us
the shadows fall all around me and you

Green Island

Written By: The Midnight Kites

The ice broke in sheets
we thought it was solid
because it had been, for seasons before

We quickly retreated
found an island in winter
where all we did the whole time was imagine it green

She was with you
your beautiful selves
somehow I turned into one too

All I can do
is sit here and dream
see you smiling at me

For the first time in years
I remembered myself
saw how thin that ice really was

All fear dissolved
as in our dreams
I looked down and my hands were steady

All I can do
is sit here and dream
see you smiling at me
I've been here before
it does harm no good
but try telling that to my soul

The ice broke in sheets
we thought it was solid
because it had been, for seasons before
where all we did the whole time was imagine it green

Caution to the Wind

Written By: Jill McDougall

Pack up your valuables
Leave the rest behind
Anything more will leave you breathless
This old truck doesn’t run anymore
It served you well for years
You’d do best to walk from here

Throw your caution to the wind
Half your life’s been spent
Way too certain
You can find your own way
No one else to say
What is good for you

There will be help along the way
Though there’s no sign for miles
You’ll have to trust your instincts
Use the tools that you’ve been given
Build the house from the ground up
No one said it’s over

Throw your caution to the wind
Half your life’s been spent
Way too certain
You can find your own way
No one else to say
What is good for you

Step outside the box
the window of your grief
go outside
it’s raining for you
