Bio

Equal to the variety of their influences, The Moderns have an uncanny ability to mesh these disparate sounds into something both accessible…yet singular. Monique’s rich vocals are unmistakable. Alan’s musical resources are varied enough that he has created his own style as a default setting; a style that he colours the entire project with. Between the two of them, they filter a wide array of influences that result in a sound that could only be described as original.

The Moderns formed in May of 2005. Starting with some lo-fi home recordings and branching out into live performances, they found that they had a rare musical connection, and received a fabulous response.

Monique has a long history of live performance in various situations, including rock and r&b bands, jazz trios, and a professional production of Cabaret. She has worked with Spencer Evans, who toured as keyboardist with The Cowboy Junkies. In addition, Monique has performed on the same bill as Sarah Harmer and provided vocals for Luther Wright and The Wrongs on their tribute cd of Pink Floyd’s The Wall.

Alan went from studying jazz guitar at Toronto’s Humber College to taking private lessons from internationally acclaimed guitarist Don Ross. In his time he has released a full length cd with his band The Harpies, opened for The Trews, and penned a song inspired by Timothy Findley’s novel Pilgrim. Mr. Findley said “The song is gorgeous! Are all those voices yours? Whether or not they are, they are beautiful.” Alan won a FACTOR Professional Demo Award in 2001.

The ethos of The Moderns is to “just build the damn thing. Build it good and strong. They will come.”
