"The Morning Chorus"

Having cut a collective tooth or two in the live music scene, we will always have a soft spot for boys in bands (no homo). Today we focus on a four-piece based just a short trip up the M1, The Morning Chorus. When a band has a man like Romesh Dodangoda helming their debut EP, we cannot sit idly by….

OK, so we had to Google Romesh Dodangoda, but the man has worked with established artists and legends ( Motorhead, Funeral for a Friend, Bullet for my Valentine), as well as pioneering new artist (such as Kids in Glass Houses and Twin Atlantic) so our pants are squeaking in anticipation. They do like to tease us.

We’ve spoken before about the camaraderie and cohesion of bands before and how we value sheer spirit and ambition outline more than showmanship. The Morning Chorus seem to have their ethos based on openness and full emotional exposure. Having said in interviews, that they write mainly based on personal experience, they spare the angsty fervor and instead bare soul and all; keying into the mind and psyche, stirring and comforting the cathartic cradle. You emote with the band, share their innermost musings and find yourself bound to every note.

The band have listed Jimmy Eat World, Relient K and Death Cab For Cutie as their influences, and while the guitars and sound overtly references the former two, matching their contemporaries for striving vocals, gorgeous chords and monumental movements, Tom Stilgoe instills the smouldering and sincere vocal reservations of Ben Gibbard. While not mimicking his voice, Tom takes away the key component and conveys a cracking candidness, lending a soft yet distinguishing lead to their powerful pieces. Never vying for place, the two piece together perfectly as demonstrated on Sunshine Breaks, their first single. Slow burning, steadily building and suitably bold, the track is a firm foot forward for these guys. It’s honest, it’s true and it’s only just begun.

The stage is set for the new year and while ‘emo’ music has taken a kicking over the recent years, The Morning Chorus show us to shun the theatrics and winkle pickers and be direct and open. Truly remarkable from the dredge of tweaked and tuned pop-poop-platter we are so accustomed to dining from. - Commercial Free
