There is this great band - based in the SF Valley - called The Mornings. I've seen them a couple of times and they are energetic and very entertaining with their blend of rock, pop and reggae along with some 70's Wurlitzer-keyboards and horns on occasion. Recently, they have been surprising with some unusual things in their live shows. The last time I saw them the lead singer Adam did this dance-hall reggae thing that sounded like Shaggy and then three of the guys did a rapid-fire rap behind him, all over this ambient beat - which was great as well as pretty funny. One other time I saw them, they had a show at the House of Blues in Hollywood that was inspired by - as well as coinciding with - LOST the TV show - complete with singing and playing the DRIVESHAFT song 'YOU ALL EVERYBODY' . (If you watch Lost, you'll know what that is).
The Mint show was outstanding with the guys starting with a bang with the song 'Morsel' and playing crowd favorites along the way - including the tunes 'Happy,' the jazzy 'Best Behavior' and the somber 'War.'
Their last tune - called 'It's Alright' - also a crowd favorite - featured lead singer Adam playing sax and the rhythm guitarist playing trumpet in a ska-meets-Chicago blend.
Very cool group of guys to watch. The drummer Paulie Z looks like Animal the Muppet when he plays and the tattooed guitarist Brigham rips with reckless abandon - with hair flying everywhere.
Look for the band's album on iTunes (enter The Mornings and Rhino in the search field) to hear these songs for yourself. Also there are www.myspace.com/themornings and a fan page on Facebook to check 'em out
