"THE MORROW"

Kathryn Moore

When Dan Morrow, Vocalist and Guitarist for The Morrow, left London in 2007 to move to New York and try and escape “bad luck love stories”, he came to find that there were just as many, if not more, waiting for him in New York. This would be a sad story if it wasn’t for the “birth” of The Morrow. With lyrics that are easy to understand because they are about love and heartbreak and music with a Dire Straights or Beetleish feel to it, their music is very catchy. I tend to find myself tapping my toe by the time the song that I’m listening to ends, and with an added Swing feel every now and then, their music is something I truly enjoy to hear.

Dan Morrow-Vocals and Guitar, Kevin Kahawai-Backing Vocals and Drums, and Carl Rohumaa-Bass are the men behind the music. The intense, emotional lyrics go very well with Dan’s calm accent and Kevin and Carl’s musical creations that are relaxing and energetic at the same time.

Although there are no specific tours planned for The Morrow, they do play random, small shows in the Brooklyn, Manhattan, or London area. You can go to www.myspace.com/themorrownyc for dates and to listen to some of their songs.

"GALAPAGOS JULY '07"

Frodo says, ‘The 'morrow is looking rather bright’

The Morrow, Galapagos, Wednesday, June 30
By Taryn Fort

Having seen various U.S. shows featuring Daniel Morrow either solo or in accompaniment with a second guitar, I was nicely taken aback by the result of Morrow’s transition from solitary guitar-man to the now wholly band called ‘The Morrow.’ A British reincarnation from Morrow’s London days, now fully loaded with new American members, Morrow is heading up a guitar-laden group-producing nice juxtaposition against numerous flashes and respectful hints of Elliot Smith, The Beatles, and perhaps a here-and-there of Paul Simon. Opening with Hold On, it was obvious this newborn band’s been in practice. With Morrow’s baring-it-all lyrics, lead guitarist Dugans Martinez’ jagged riffs, fairly unrestricted depth from bass guitarist Josh Kross, and Kevin Kahawi’s adept drumming, it appears that this band is something of an oxymoron that actually works. Although Morrow’s solo acoustic shows are always tippity-top of the pleasant events schedule, it’s damn great to find a very tight and slightly hard-edged band managing to include many understated and light moments similar to the air Smith blessed us with. To boot, they managed to incorporate every type of song-from a Stones’-ready rock n’roll piece, to the ever-present ballad and cover. No doubt the distinguishing sound threading throughout the set was mainly due to Morrow’s expansive vocal range, which is remnant of both Thom Yorke and the aforementioned Smith. His high clear voice is distinct. I cannot neglect to note that Kahawai piped in throughout the set, giving a nice parallel sound, but Morrow’s depth dominated. Balancing it all out was a bit of textured detailing in this guitar-happy band’s respective chords-a welcome distinction. In a nutshell, this band is tight, concise, and Morrow himself is quite charismatic on stage, evoking confidence allowed to a veteran musician. File Under Friend and Writing Itself further sealed the set. The Emoticon played out with a faster, modernized bass-led march, while I Found Out was sheer rock ‘n roll. Popping up near the end was a unique version of Dream a Little Dream, famously covered in the last century by both Mama Cass and Louis Armstrong. The song took on its own life swiftly transitioning from a slap-happy bit to head-on rock, finally slowing with a hint of blues. Near the end, therein did lie a minor technical glitch to be shrugged off, but I noticed the audience never stopped dancing.

DANIEL MORROW: vox and guitar

DUGANS MARTINEZ: lead guitar
JOSH KROSS: bass guitar
