"Reaching for the Peaks"

With a soulful blend of Thom Yorke drama and Dan Vacon (The Dudes) quirkiness, Cunningham’s vocals anchor The Mountaineer’s shimmering folk-pop sound. - Metro

"The Mountaineer"

With Calgary's own Jourdan Cunningham at the helm of this rock outfit, one word comes to mind: Smooth. If you're not swooning over these handsome young men and their tales of love both won and lost, you're doing something wrong. Heartfelt is too cliche a word to use; the Mountaineer are going straight for the gut. - Sled Island Music Festival

Bio

It typically takes average rock songs about three minutes to finish a thought. They establish a premise in the verse, deviate from it in the chorus, repeat, bridge, repeat, done. But some stories take longer to express themselves. Some thoughts go deeper, some feelings run thicker, and sometimes further exploration is required. Through washes of glimmering guitar and restrained pop grooves, The Mountaineer doesn't mind taking the time to finish their thought.

Formed in the cold months of 2010, the four-piece indie rock band started from scratch and grew up fast. Singer and guitarist Jourdan Cunningham first decided to make public the slow-burning folk songs he had been quietly writing and recruited co- worker, Geoff Rattan, to play along on drums. The two began putting out crazy vibes for a guitarist and bassist while they cut their teeth at open mic nights. As a direct result of those vibes, a bass player approached the band after a performance to nominate himself for the position. Not long after, Cunningham intuitively guessed that he had a guitar whiz on his hands when Dan Hanycz walked into the shoe store he was working at.

They immediately set about developing a collective voice for Cunningham’s soulful compositions. Finding that they often stretched to four and five minutes to express themselves, The Mountaineer settled into sustained, dreamy explorations that eschewed the typical pop format for something more descriptive. The result is both dramatic and refined; always going for feeling, but never feeling over the top.

Although new to Calgary's music scene, The Mountaineer is already making waves across the city. Having played with amazing talent like Dojo Workhorse, Miesha & the Spanks, Samantha Savage Smith, Cowpuncher, Scenic Route to Alaska, Northcoat, Rueben Bollock, and Raleigh, The Mountaineer is looking forward to their set at Sled Island 2012, and their upcoming Western Canadian tour.

Currently they’re preparing to release the first physical proof of their patience and flow. Recorded in winter 2012 with producer Andrew Hamill, just past their one-year mark; The Mountaineer’s first album is set to be released in spring 2012. Though their next shows will take them away from their Calgary homes, they’ll have more stories to bring home soon, sitting us down around a firepit again; compelling us to sing along.
