"Hard Work Paying Off for TND"

With hundreds of bands these days, it's hard to keep up which ones actually have potential. Chicago's newest musical talented group of musicians, The New Diet, boasts to be one of the few. What began as a three piece band and even a five piece at one point, now consist of four of the most down-to-Earth guys you will meet: Anthony Focareto (vocals/guitar), Adrian Serano (guitar/vocals), Jorge Uribe (drums), Dillon Kelley(bass/catcher/dh/extraordinaire) . I had the opportunity to talk to the lead singer, Anthony Focareto, for a class assignment.

Focareto claims that being in a band is a "Hard Work". He wakes up everyday to go to work at a local pizzeria with band member Uribe and discuss the bands' progress on new songs and better ways to promote the band. They practice and write on Tuesday's at Uribe's house and all discuss their Ideas over mother's master crafted latin meal. "Were all really motivated. We love promoting at shows and acting like ghetto Mayans", Focareto claims. The New Diet is a perfect example of an independent band that is involved with every aspect of the band.

Being in a band is not as glamorous as the media claims it to be. Bands don't become famous or even signed by a record company over night. The New Diet tirelessly works hard to promote their band and prove themselves to a new audience. Once they have established their name, it becomes easier to book shows. However, it doesn't mean that everyone will like you but this doesn't mean that you should give up. The salary of an average, unsigned band is not very glamourous either. The band earns about $50-$100 per show and if they are lucky fans will buy their merchandise. All of their earnings go to the band. "If you're in it to make money.. you're in it for the wrong reason. I would have been racing horses if I was shorter or possibly a trucker" What is The New Diet's reason for it then?

After a year of recording their debut E.P, Green, The New Diet has their share of stories as a band. Recording at one of the best recording studios in Chicago, Gravity Studios, was an expected financial strain for the band. However, the band did not expect the recording process to be also a mental strain. Going into the studio in the beginning was not how the band had expected it to be. They ended up losing a band member during their recording process.

"It was stressful but we had to make the songs sound great and feel natural at the same time, I wouldn't settle, so I pushed myself through some late nights", explains Focareto. "Pbr, caffine, and green definitely helped us get through, but mainly it was going to our myspace and email account everyday and seeing our fans/friends/cheer us on."

When The New Diet played at the Metro for the first time on February 3, 2007, I was lucky enough to be at the front row. With a crowd that filled the venue all the way to the balcony area, the moment was completely surreal for the band. With every note and every beat, the crowd screams louder, wanting more. Focareto hits every note of the song with so much heart, it spreads to every corner of the crowded room. It's hard not to be amazed by a band that lays everything out for the crowd with every beat of their song. All their trials and successes as a band reflects through the passion they put with every song they play.

For The New Diet, playing music is not about the fame or money. They value each show they play and each fan that adds them on Myspace. They had gone through their share of the ups and downs of being in a band. All of their experiences had shaped them to be the band that they are. With their E.P due to release April 08', The New Diet is finally ready to embark on bigger things.

"The New Diet"

This Chicago band takes their cues from some of the better power-pop-punk from the 90s. Nice and catchy, and none of that self-conciously nerdy obnoxiousness you think of when someone says "think Weezer and Cheap Trick".

Bio

In the midst of Chicago’s pop-punk explosion of 2005, The New Diet went in a slightly different direction. With memorable melodies and insightful lyrics Anthony Focareto (the bands founding member) started creating anthemic rock/indie pop songs. This isn’t exactly the type of music anyone would expect to come out of Chicago’s Little Village/K-ville neighborhood. Anthony (vocals/guitar) and Jorge Uribe (drums) reside on one of the more adventurous sides of Chicago. Their 2-song demo featuring “Gun Shy” and “Get With the Program” made its rounds through the local scene and a fan base started to grow.

As of February 2007, The New Diet were a full fledged indie rock quartet with the addition of Adrian Serrano (guitar/vox/keys) and Dillon Kelley(bass) while playing Chicago venues like The Metro, Beat kitchen, Subterranean, and The Cubby Bear. The not so distant Northwest Indiana crowd proved to be fans as well by packing venues like Bean Counters in Highland and New Horizon in Winona Lake.

Playing over 100 shows, one of the highlights so far has been a sold out show at the Metro. In late 2007 they took some time off to record their self-financed album “Green” at Gravity Studios. This EP features a unique mix of catchy melodies and solid structures that are epic in nature, but always intimate. A great example of this are in songs like “Reasons” and “Explanations”

2008 proved to be a big year for the hardworking band. They played their first headlining show in February at Subterranean, and released their first EP Green on April 4th with a show at Beat Kitchen featuring Darkroom. In the summer of 2008 the four set out on their first tour, making their way through the midwest and east coast before returning home 3 weeks later, selling hundreds of CDs along the way.

The band is starting 2009 off to a running start. New music is being written and recorded and a early spring tour is in the works.
