"The New Shining recording new album"

Already scoring one of the top songs of 2008 on Alternative Addiction, with their hit single “Red Eyes” The [New] Shining are hard at work recording their next album. The band will spend part of next month in a studio in Cincinnati with producer Erwin Muspers (known from Bon Jovi, Van Halen, Metallica, David Bowie, Scorpions).

An additional portion of the album will be recorded in the Netherlands, with the album targeted to be complete in early June. A release date for the new album has not been announced, but is expected sometime in late 2009.

The Netherland’s based band formed in 2006, and released their debut album Supernatural Showdown in the spring of 2008. Shortly after the album’s release, a track from the album, called “Red Eyes” was added to the Alternative Addiction Top 20. The song was an instant hit, and ended up being one of the most listened to songs of 2008.

"The New Shining hoping momentum will carry to us"

Netherlands based rock band The New Shining have been enjoying great success through much of Europe since releasing their debut album “Supernatural Showdown” in April, now they are preparing for a promotional push in the US, and if their success on the Alternative Addiction Top 20 chart is any indication, they’ve much success to come.

Oddly, the song that’s gotten them so much attention on Alternative Addiction, happens to be a single that the band has yet to release. The song “Red Eyes” was added to Alternative Addiction’s Top 20 chart, in early May, where it quickly climbed to #1 and remained there for over a month.

“Red Eyes has not been an official single yet.. till now of course.. We can take a hint!” lead singer Nax told Alternative Addiction. “Red Eyes will be our 2nd single to be released beginning of September this year.”

Nax says that there’s been plenty of signs that band is ready for an equally successful runs in the US besides the band’s success on AA.

“We’ve had many requests from especially American radio stations to send them our cd. Also the response through our MySpace has been overwhelming,” explained Nax.

“But since we really want to play America sometime soon, that’s all the better for us obviously. There’s a good chance we’ll feel so at home over there, we might never want to leave again!”

The band’s debut album, definitely has an American Rock feel to it, including a cover of the Nine Inch Nails classic “Hurt” – a track that Nax says he discovered by Johnny Cash’s cover.

“I was sold, instantly. I was touched to my very core. I can’t even begin to express what that did to me,” said Nax. “So we decided to cover it, not knowing by the way, that the original belongs to Trent Reznor. We found that out later on. Since Johnny Cash’s version was acoustic we decided to cover it The [New] Shining-style.”

The band’s album is not yet available in stores in the US, but fans in the states can download the CD on iTunes, and soon, order it on Amazon.

As for the oddly placed brackets within the band’s name, Nax says there’s really no hidden meaning, it was just part of the band original logo design and stuck with the band.

“We like it, and so does everyone we speak. It’s catchy,” says Nax. “Mind you, they have to be straight kind [ ] , not the general brackets ( ) …just so you know!”

The New Shining will be playing a number of shows including several large festivals in Europe this summer, then embark on a club tour in the fall.

“Our music is made for “live” and large crowds. We love that stuff!” - Alternative Addiction (USA) 11-07-2008

"The New Shining - Supernatural Showdown"

Two things puzzle me about The New Shining. First of all, how can they possibly be this good on their debut album, and second of all, how are they from Holland? But don't you worry, I'm going to be discussing both of those during the course of the review of "Supernatural Showdown", an album that has taken me long to review because I wanted to be really sure before rating it high.

Lets initially deal with the Dutch thing. On the first spin, you're completely blown away by just how massively huge the album opener "Temptation" and its chorus sounds like. We're talking about colossal alternative rock riffing (think 3 Doors Down on steroids), and a voice that could easily fill stadiums with its echoing rock star holler, and this is done without a single scratch or dent in the clean voice. We're talking about a band who sounds so undeniably BillBoard Modern Rock chart that even after more than ten listens I'm having a hard time believing they originate from the Netherlands. Think Alter Bridge having an affair with 30 Seconds To Mars or something and you're pretty close.

Now lets move on to the matter of the quality demonstrated on this album. Song after song, the album boasts with songs perfectly capable of penetrating the charts in every country where Nickelback is doing well, even topping them in some instances. The first five songs all possess the qualities required for the label "great rock song": they are huge in sound, have stupendously big choruses, and have enough attitude and kick to keep the accelerated pace of the album going... until song six, where "Hurt" cuts the tempo by almost two thirds. While the six minute ballad song is touching, there's no way around the fact that it has roughly the same effect on the album as speeding your car into a brick wall. For six whole minutes we are left waiting for the pace to pick up again. I swear each and EVERY time I've listened to this album, I've always stumbled on "Hurt" and turned something else on. What makes things even worse is that what possibly constitutes as the album's single best song, "It's A Shame", is placed directly after the song. What an ironic title, because had "Hurt" been placed as the last track on the record, my guess is that 90% of the people who give "Supernatural Showdown" a listen would fall in love with the album. Had "Shadows In A Room", the one minute piano/acoustic ballad been there instead, things would've been much better indeed.

Later on in the album, "Stand Back" brings a heavier - dare I say post-grunge - element into the sound. I still find the echoing clean vocal choruses working much better for The New Shining than the Saliva / Lifehouse / Nickelback / (insert another similar band here) plagiarism. Just as the elevating verses a la Creed work much better than the boring ballads "Reason To Believe".

Quick final summary for those just skimming through: "Supernatural Showdown" starts out great. It demonstrates every reason why bands like Alter Bridge are topping the charts across the globe (because they write good songs, duh). It's so unfortunate, then, that the momentum is erased with a ballad all too early, from which the album never really recovers back to the real high ratings despite some great songs in the end.

"The New Shining - Supernatural Showdown (4,5 out of 5)"

I totally surrender when I hear a band that has elements of both 80´s hard rock and modern rock in their sound just like this power trio from Holland.
This is exactly what I have been waiting for, huge sounding guitars and melodic vocals with strong choruses.
Their debut was produced by Oscar Holleman (Within Temptation) and it sounds like a million bucks, let me tell you.
Big rock for big arenas and another contender for my top album list of 2008.

BIO:
The New Shining are a heavy rock band, formed in the summer of 2006 by three ambitious guys.

The New Shining sound like..? Like one critic put it: “The New Shining sound like the Foo Fighter’s and U2’s high-strung little brother. Lead-singer Nax has a natural rawness in his voice which makes the songs even better.
TNS have a raw but polished sound, suitable for radio. And national radio station 3FM thought so too. They declared the band “Serious Talent”.
Or, what about this?:
“Driven and warm-blooded emo-rock with passionate singing and a “larger than life” topping”.
Label them or judge for yourself. Fact remains that TNS are three idiosyncratic guys in a rock band, with an international sound that revolves around power, passion and energy. With catchy atmospheric tunes and choruses, and lyrics that scratch more than just the surface.

The New Shining is a band best heard live! All songs are created in a ‘live’ setting. Live performance on stage is the best way to experience their music.
Together with the band’s light-show, you’ll be in for an energetic and overwhelming show!
