"The Normals, Now Music Now"

- Voir/Montreal

"Old Punks Never Die, They Reunite"

When the Normals hit the stage at the Cabaret Playhouse on Parc Ave. just over a year ago, it was the first time guitarist Rob Labelle, bassist Scott Cameron and drummer Tracy Howe had played live together in 33 years. A year later, the power trio — who play classic punk that springs directly from the early Clash and Buzzcocks records — have released an album of their 1978-era songs and have probably been seen by more people this time around than during their brief run in the late-’70s. Howe had more success fronting his ’80s new-wave band Rational Youth.

The reformed Normals have been together for longer than the original Normals, and are tentatively talking about writing new songs.

"Never Mind the Bollocks, Here's The Normals"

- Voir Gatineau/Ottawa

Bio

The Normals were arguably the first band to emerge from the underground Montreal punk scene in 1977. It was a short-lived affair, and they disbanded in 1978, leaving behind a wealth of punk rock anthems which were only documented on a hastily recorded demo and live cassette recording. Drummer Tracy Howe went on to form the post-punk Heaven Seventeen and later, Rational Youth, Rob Labelle joined The American Devices and Scott Cameron assembled The Eighties with The Nils's Carlos Soria. Thanks to the 2011 scrappy documentary, "MTL Punk: The First Wave," The Normals reformed and recorded their entire 16-song repertoire. The recording has been just been released on the indy Nachos label on vinyl as well as CD.
