Bio

Initially an extension of a project called Voodoo’s Child led by original lead guitarist, Jon Bauer, the Normal Street has, for over three years, become a premier blues rock group touring the Midwest and suburbs of Chicago. Playing locations ranging from the Quad Cities to Cary, Illinois, their sound and experience is attributed to learning the demanding and often complex language of the life of a band and the ruthless quest of self promotion. Normal Street has found itself focused stylistically on the junction of blues/rock music, attracted particularly to the contrast of both its classic vigor and progressive twists; drawing from artists such as Muddy Waters, Jimi Hendrix, Stevie Ray Vaughan, and Joe Bonamassa. With distinguishing funk undertones, Normal Street is able to create something fresh but familiar in the same sense. The original song included in their demo CD flaunts a raw, standard sound, and embraces the blues as the core of its purpose. The Normal Street Band is the clear resonance of something both old and new, the current flesh of blues music combined with the powerful sounds of its past

Drums/Vocals: From the age of twelve, “Tommy Gun” Gilman has been an resolute percussionist, believing that experience often leads toward a desire to teach others his profound passion for music. His style and inspirations spawn from artists such as Tommy Igoe, Steve Gadd, Steve Smith, Buddy Rich, Keith Carlock, Mike Portnoy, and Tito Puente. Aside from the years he spent performing in dozens of groups, orchestras, and ensembles throughout the course of his youth education and college, Tom guides students by way of his own percussion education program, Flam & Cheese Percussion, and also instructs multiple high school drumlines.

Guitar/Vocals: A cellist in the Illinois Valley Youth Orchestra at age six, Jon was fated to become not only a diverse and successful musician, but eventually found that his natural abilities afforded him the opportunity to excel strongly in guitar. Performing with artists such as John Cooper, Michael Stryker, Jim McNeely, and the Manhattan Transfer, Jon has become a skilled and esteemed musician, holding much of his talent in the respect that he has for blues sound. Drawing influence from artists like Buddy Guy, Joe Bonnamasa, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton, and others, Bauer proves the bands success, “From what you do recognize, we still manage to put on our own twist."

ead Vocals: The desire to reveal successful original work and passion for blues music led her to join the Normal Street Band’s former trio. Lauren’s primary influences include artists such as Trixie Smith, Billie Holiday, Dinah Washington, and Aretha Franklin. Trained exclusively in vocal techniques for over ten years, Lauren finds deep structure and passion in the influences of gospel and jazz, writing songs that often hold true to the familiar and standard sounds of blues music.

Bass/Vocals: Musical life for Barzeen began at the age of three when he first leaned to play the violin. His long term dedication to music eventually secured him as principal bass in his college’s ensembles and also in several orchestras that played throughout the mid-west. He currently teaches music to middle school students in the south suburbs of Chicago, and carries strong inspiration from Stanley Clarke, Jaco Pastorius, J.S. Bach, Victor Wooten, John Coltrane, and Bootsy Collins.
