Bio

The Oars formed after Ilana Cameron and Kurt Goltz toured the West Coast in 2009 with Victoria based Double Bassist Tobias Meis. They quickly realised they weren't just a couple of players backing up a singer/songwriter, they were a band making songs together. Their name comes from one of the songs they wrote that summer (The Oars). The Oars is Ilana Cameron on vocals  and Fender Rhodes Keyboard, Kurt Goltz on acoustic guitar,  and Karl Sommerfeld on Violin.

Cameron blends her jazz-trained voice with the bell-like tones of the Fender Rhodes keyboard. Goltz and Meis create an intricate accompanying landscape of fingerstyle guitar and cello-like classical bass.
Together the group weaves a tapestry that is more than the sum of it's parts and creates songs that are atmospheric and rich in subtlety and texture.

The Oars will be on tour in Columbia Basin in 2014. Stay tuned for tour dates to be announced soon.

In 2010 Ilana Cameron recently received a grant from the Columbia/Kootenay Cultural Alliance to write and record a historical song cycle based on stories from the Creston Valley area where she resides when she not on the road. They have been receiving airplay on CBC Radio One (All Points West) and were featured on a Vancouver Co-op Radio show (No Apologies Necessary) where they played songs live in studio.
