“Theodis Ealey Live” “The Juke Joint Experience” on
IFGAM Records
Run Time: 54:02
Worldwide Availability March 3, 2009
One of the soul-blues world’s finest entertainers, Theodis Ealey is an accomplished chitlin circuit soul man who has made the rounds for a long time. His 2004 runaway smash “Stand Up In It” has earned him a solid place in the “party blues” genre history as one of the best. Bringing in influences from his birthplace of Mississippi, Southern Fried Soul, and just a general “adult” themed show; Ealey captures the energy of his show on this fresh sounding disc full of energy, funk, and soul.
Many of the grooves here are some of Theodis’ signature live show songs including soul-blues tunes “Move with the Motion,” “Francine,” and his signature song “Stand Up In It.” Some of the material, which gets this album labeled with a Parental Advisory sticker, is definitely all about the bawdy, naughty, crude sexual behavior that earns the blues it’s title of being “the devil’s music.” There are three straightforward blues tunes here, too. The all-too-oft covered Jimmy Reed classic “Baby What You Want Me To Do,” the old classic “Catfish Blues,” and the Ealey original “What Poor Theo Gonna Do With Myself.” This album also shows where some of modern day hip hop draws from its old school beats and definitely its crass sexual behavior. Ealey helps you draw a clear line between old school and today.
For a live album, it’s mixed straight from a soundboard so very little crowd noise is going to invade in. However, with that said, some of the tracks are mixed oddly at the beginnings an ends, which leads me to believe some mid song banter has been cut for time. However, the majority of the music is here with mistakes (which there are hardly any noticeable ones as Easley’s band is tight and crisp throughout) and all the energy a live show brings.
Overall, this disc reminds me of some of the great party blues records from years gone by. Anyone remember Chick Willis’ Stoop Down Baby? Ealey’s electric and entertaining nature really shine brightly on this disc, reminding fans and newcomers alike why he’s a sought-after entertainer. Ealey takes some fine guitar breaks on the straight ahead blues tunes that have some nice phrasing, but nothing really riveting. This album is just pure fun, and that’s something that’s never underappreciated.

Theodis Ealey, It’s A Real Good Thang, IFGAM Records.
Georgian Theodis Ealey is another outstanding African/American blues guitarist, influenced by rock, R&B and traditional blues stylings and unafraid to wear his heart on his sleeve, espousing tales of good love, bad love, loss and loneliness. A lot of people have a misconception that blues music is sad stuff. Nothing could be further from the truth and Theodis Ealey’s happy, jumping shuffles like “I Want You” and “Baby You’ve Got What It Takes” drive that fact straight home. Ealey’s vocals and guitar playing are superior throughout, making It’s A Real Good Thang a standout.
