The Odyssey Favor

The Odyssey Favor

BandRockAlternative

A tasty concoction of Pixies rock and Velvet Underground lyricism swizzled with a touch of Beach Boys harmony.

Biography

The lyrics of The Odyssey Favor often dwell in the beautiful side of tragedy and the tragic aspects of beauty. Their lyrics seem to revel in the chaotic (“Catch Me Karen,” the opening track on the bands self-titled CD, calls for “All hands on deck, it’s black tie for the wreck”) and find unease in status quo (“Britney” addresses a pop-culture-based society where “nothing seems real when the world’s not paying attention”). The Odyssey Favor layers these lyrics on music that blends the quirkiness of art-rock with a midwestern pop sensibility. The result keeps you moving while you listen and sticks with you long after.

Song writing duties are mainly split between Chad Dressler and Erik Styles, who tackle such diverse topics as espionage, burritos, fractured domiciles and John Steinbeck novels. Bassist Jenny Elig and Drummer Andrew Lee Shutz provide a solid rhythm section and harmonies ranging from sweet to haunting.

A couple of years and a host of shows later, The Odyssey Favor has built a following among music fans in Indianapolis who are drawn to their unique brand of rock’n’roll heartbreak and mayhem. The Odyssey Favor’s self-titled debut CD is available online at CD Baby and iTunes or in Indianapolis at Luna Music and Indy CD and Vinyl.

Penalties

Written By: The Odyssey Favor

I afford myself some luxuries, when I have time and I am willing
And I pay prescription prices, for hired drugs to do my killing
When I’m tired of working hard, I take myself out on vacation
And I leave my soul at home to alleviate all kinds of complications,
And consternation, Lame explanations, long conversations

I suppose there’s penalties, for getting caught with one of these
I could see this whole thing heading south
But I have seen the other side and I don’t know how the gap got so wide
Between what you meant and what came out of your mouth.

And it’s getting late, I guess we better go
But we were never saved, never sad, never said to say it isn’t so

I can’t compete with mysteries, I can’t compel the truth within you
But if we’re getting on with it, might I propose that we begin to
Find some things that we can settle on, trace our route across the nation
Take our place at the bleeding edge, and we’ll take great pains just to contain our jubilation
Your exaltations, our close relations, congratulations
So after one more afterthought, check the paper see who got caught
Hang our heads until the whole thing settles down
But archetypes and angels say, follow us and we’ll show you the way
Got to take time for your thoughts to come back around

And we’re getting old, I guess it’s time to go
But you were never told, never sold, too bold to say it isn’t so

God Unknown

Written By: The Odyssey Favor

I see you standing. I hear the sound.
Tonight we’re sleeping on hallowed ground.
And when you whispered into my ear,
“I know you’re searching but you won’t find it here.”
I got some rest then. You wet the stone.
The father told me I should leave it alone.
He doesn’t know though, I can’t explain
He cursed the land but now he’s praying for the rain.
And from the valley, a sacrifice.
The blood it runs so shallow across the frost and the ice.

I trade my blood for the water. I feed the water to the stone.
And I am fading ever onward unto a God unknown.
And one was never for the money. And two was never for the show
If you could just come back and hold me, then I could finally let go.

Elizabeth said before she fell,
“You’ve got a good mind to pull us both beyond this hell
And gone are all the good times, gone is all the rain”
Here is where she passed on so here is where I’m staying
I’ve got the beard to be the savior got the guts to spill the blood.
The sky will crack right open and the dirt will turn to mud
And the priest will preach against it but the people will rejoice.
They’ll say that I went crazy but you know I had no choice.
On hallowed ground my back is resting. The drops begin to fall.
The summer bleached these mountains where the grass begins to crawl
As I am fading ever onward, to a God unknown.
The water hits the moss and me. Goodbye I’m going home.

I trade my blood for the water. I feed the water to the stone.
And I am fading ever onward unto a God unknown.
And one was never for the money. And two was never gonna show
If you could just come back and hold me, then I could finally let go.
