"Roots" EP 2016

Bio

With the release of the Roots EP,  singer songwriter Jess Jones brings a new feel to a classic genre. Lush with layers of stringed instrumentation, addicting vocal melodies, and a folk pop attitude, the song boasts the aesthetic of indie folk anthems. Although the songs are diverse from one another, there is  glue that holds them all together much like a concept album. Most importantly, the record never loses sight of the emotional platform great songs are built from.

The first single and title track "Roots" as an instant pop folk classic. Complete with beautiful vocal harmonies, and a real southern Americana feel, the song seems to breathe and build as it plays on.

"I went through I time where I came up with a motivational word for myself each week.  One week it was ‘grounding’ because when I first came to LA I didn’t have an apartment and was kind of moving from place to place.  I decided the purpose of grounding would be to grow roots, in other words make Los Angeles feel like home and like I belong. The album is very upbeat because I was always optimistic that Los Angeles was a good move for me.  A lot of the songs are about leaving home/traveling and finding a sense of belonging." says the songwriter of her single

Although the single speaks volume for the EP, to get a real understudying of where Jones is coming from, it should be heard in its entirety.

"Recording this EP brought about new harmonies and instrumentation to my music.  I improvised the mandolin solo on Fantasy, and my mandolin skills continue to improve.  When I performed my songs alone they were always quiet and on the slower side, once Dustin (on drums) joined me my songs became more upbeat and fun", says Jones of the EP and the songwriting process behind it.

Starting with guitar at the age of only 13, Jess Jones became quickly attached to writing music and soon after, began writing full songs. Studying classical guitar and voice at the Crane Music School opened her up to more options and influence as a songwriter and performer. It was around that time Jones joined an Acapela group and shortly after, a duo group called From Another Mister. The group performed around campus as well as the Wildcard Music Festival in Bufflo NY. It wasn't until relocating to Los Angeles that the songwriter met Dustin Shapiro and Dan McNay bringing instrumentation like Banjo into the mix. Along with Ian McNay on drums and Michael Fox on violin , the band call themselves Hat Factory, and consistently play the Los Angeles area. These are the players that hoped put together the Roots Ep with Jones. With plenty of natural acoustic instrumentation, the EP holds a true folk vibe.

The Roots Ep is available for streaming and download on most major digital outlets, and Jones is already planning upcoming gigs around and outside the greater Los Angeles area in support of her release.
