"JAMS ON THE CHEAP"

Blow your allowance already? Yeah, I know -- Pixie Sticks and root beer really take a bite out of the ol’ budget. Well, if you can scrounge up four bucks, you can still catch an all-ages concert featuring up-and-coming local and regional bands. Higher Ground kicks off its Fantastic $4 Band Night on Wednesday, June 7, with a performance from Burlington’s own Casual Fiasco. Also appearing on the Showcase Lounge stage are Theory of Revolution and The Mike Johnson Experience.

“We decided to try developing a series . . . where the tickets are cheap and everybody gets a shot,” says HG talent buyer/co-owner Alex Crothers. “When we announced the series in April we had an overwhelming response. That was great, because we honestly had no idea if anyone would care.”

Well, there are some strong incentives. The event will serve as a proving ground for local acts hungry to rock the bigger stages. “We get to hear the bands play live and see who can rally the fans to come out and support them,” Crothers continues. “The bands who draw the biggest crowds will get preference for support slots on the main stage.” Next stop, Madison Square Garden.

There’s already some serious buzz about the series’ maiden voyage. Advance ticket sales have been strong, which bodes well for future shows. Some of the excitement is no doubt due to the Casual Fiasco, who spent the last year building a fan base in Burlington and beyond. In fact, they recently returned from a successful, 60-gig tour. Wednesday’s concert will be their first time headlining at Higher Ground. Chances are it won’t be their last. - SEVEN DAYS
