THE OSKAR storms the stage topless, in stockings and high heels, something female performers don't even dare do these days. He's the man with make-up and scars. He sings of lust, love, attraction, seduction. He personifies eroticism and oozes sexuality. He owns the room like Bowie in his prime. He gets bodies moving, gets bodies sweaty, gets bodies connected.
THE OSKAR is the latest solo sensation in electro-pop, and his story is as unlikely as you'll ever hear. An expatriated Russian - who at one point lived in Siberia - THE OSKAR followed his dreams at age 15 and moved to Moscow, literally knocking on doors in an attempt to get discovered. And it worked: he was soon signed to a Russian label, and, while still in his teens, was already on top of the national charts with his #1 hit "Between Me and You." He spent these early years shocking, captivating and entertaining Russian audiences, sometimes as large as 30,000.
But he proved to be too hot for his motherland. Anti-war messages in the video for "Running to the Edge" caught the attention of the Russian Parliament, and earned him the honor of being the first artist banned on Russian MTV. Fed up with being censored, and yearning for a new challenge, THE OSKAR moved to New York City, where he could be free to pursue his true goal: international superstardom.
Fantasies of a Rockstar, his first official full-length, is THE OSKAR's true arrival. Featuring tracks produced Super Buddha – the team responsible for recent releases by Debbie Harry, The Scissor Sisters and Rufus Wainwright – Fantasies of a Rockstar is a self-written tour de force of styles and rhythms, effortlessly switching from Hedwig-style glam to steaming, pulsing electro-pop to stirring, emotionally raw ballads. Guitars grind and beats thump throughout the disc's 12 tracks as THE OSKAR, a daring artist and a true free spirit, stretches the boundaries and makes bodies move.
