"A little something from: The Other Colour"

I was just talking with my friend Taylor Perrault on the ol’ facebook chat. He was telling me about a new song release his band is coming out with in the next few days! So I’m guessing by the time this article is done, there will be a nice song above here for you to enjoy while you read :D I definitely suggest checking out there other tunes for sure.

Anyways! I know most of these gents from high school. It’s really cool to see some talent that has moved on to bigger and better things!

The Other Colour is a four-piece pop-rock band. All members slowly put together over the years from Thunder Bay.

Stephen and Taylor have known each other since they first discovered the wonders of Elmer’s School glue in S.K. So they’ve been kickin’ it musically throughout the years.

I remember seeing them perform for the first time playing a cover of Rush in their band “S.O.S” in like 2006? I was so pumped hahah.

Their style which can be heard in their two e.p’s “black” and “white” goes through a calm feel to jazzy and even edgy rock, always with a nice pop feel to it.

lots of different vibes to feel between each different song.
Stephens voice is very accurate and powerful and the music is straight forward and full of energy.

SO! I have a story to tell about these talented gentlemen! just a little history and a glimpse into what they’ve been up to in T.O! They started in 2007 in high school as a four piece band. Their music teach Mark Soderlind from St. Pat’s. recorded their music over about a year and a half. Those songs were eventually put together to make the “black” E.P.
Heres a photo of The Other Colour with Timo.

As soon as high school was done they were just waiting to get out to T.O. Just around this time they got their second guitarist, Timo Pehkonen. Timo featured on a few songs from the black album.. Then decided to join as a full time member!

Im not sure if any of you guys remember their jam space parties? haha that place was awesome.. like a airport hangar filled with drunken hooligans.. smoking sheesh from the hookah, little jam circles.. or wild dance parties.. fuck yeah.
But anyways they paired up with a buddy they jammed with at their jam space named James Agostino, the drummer. All went well and the jams were righteous. Off to Toronto to record the

“white” E.P!!

Their goal was to record as soon as they got to T.O and that’s exactly what they did! They met a nice young chap who produces in one of taylor’s classes in Humber College. The album was recorded in only one week, in their kitchen.

Timo ended up leaving the band shortly after. The Other Colour is now back to it’s roots and pushing out music as a four-piece band.

The Other Colour has a lot of really cool things coming up. I can’t wait to hear about your summer adventures guys!!
Cheers and good luck!

I wish I could have given deeper detail about their album sound but I do not have a copy of their albums and they are not in walking distance.. and walking is all I got right now.. lol

Had to share and promote you guys either way!! I hope inspiration sticks with you.The Other Colour has a lot of really cool things coming up. I can’t wait to hear about your summer adventures guys!!

"Renee Parr and The Other Colour open for The Steadies"

The Central Bar was bopping, bobbing and stomping (RIP Stompin’ Tom) to a dynamic triple bill brought to you by the sights and sounds of Renee Parr, The Other Colour and headliners The Steadies. I was fortunate enough to have had the opportunity to land my T Bay peeps TOC and Miss Parr on this bill. I enjoyed the diversity of genres that these artists all brought to the table. It was a fun night, and my debut night out on town since my Achilles injury back in early January. While I was sore the next day in more ways than one (physio AND a show was too much in one day for me at this point…hard to believe I used to work 8 hours or more on my feet THEN go to the bar) I was glad my comeback night was spent with so many great people all down for a good time.

The Other Colour at The CentralThe Other Colour, as dashing as ever, made their rock debut as a four-piece (how they originally formed as a band.) I wanted to check in with vocalist/guitarist Stephen Gray and ask how his guitar chops were coming along. Since I work with these lads I thought it would be great to up-date the readers, so we rocked out a short phoner.

Stephen has accomplished quite a feat in the last three weeks; learning the electric guitar (from ground zero) well enough to pull off a gig. As the front man of the band TOC, he previously dabbled in acoustic guitar duties. After parting ways with their fifth member and trying out another guitarist who didn’t quite work out, Gray was the natural choice. Having owned an electric but never played one long enough to even learn a song, the pressure was on. “The first time I picked it up I couldn’t strum a chord that sounded good and now I’m playing Queen solos. I practised 3 times a day, sometimes for 7 hours straight.” I’m a proud mom-ager!

The Steadies at The CentralStephen admits it’s been a challenge, but he’s up for it, and doesn’t plan to put the electric guitar down anytime soon. “I’ve picked it up quickly. It’s frustrating because I’m not as good as I want to be, but I’m learning a lot and at a fast pace. It comes naturally to me.” While their set at The Central was, in their eyes, a tad anti-climactic due to a few technical difficulties, the guys kept it together and delivered like they always do, gaining some new fans and friends along the way. “It was great to play with The Steadies, they had some solid rhythms. And of course, with a hometown artist like Renee.”

I dug the new material and look forward to hearing even more from one of Thunder Bay’s brightest exports. The horizons are broadening with the skill he’s honing, “It creates a new outlet for emotion and ideas. It gives me more energy and I’m more comfortable playing the guitar than I am standing there naked.” I personally can’t wait to see where this journey will take them, and to be honest, 4 people seem to fit a lot more comfortably on the small and gritty stages found in a lot of the city’s bars. I had forgotten that The Other Colour were once a 5-piece while seeing them fit so well as 4. I wonder how the new material will morph with the addition of Stephen’s guitar playing. “We’ll be more driven and have more of a heavier, rock sound. A lot more rock ‘n’ roll.” I like it, yes I do. - Revolution Peak Music

Bio

Formed back in the Fall of 2007, The Other Colour produce a melodious sound by blending sincere, emotional song writing with a definitive pop-rock sound. Their music is a result of exposure to a wide range of cultural and musical influences, resulting in the creation of songs with relevance, honesty, passion and integrity.

Each member has a musical background, be it Lakehead University, Humber College or lead roles in musicals. This diverse element adds a unique flare to the band, quite frankly setting them apart from their contemporaries.

While continually writing and jamming, The Other Colour have released two, five song EP's. The first, The Black EP, featuring crowd favourite Peacock Man and the second, The White EP, released in July 2012, garnering much response in only it's first weeks of release. Both were co-produced by the band.

The future is anything but black and white for The Other Colour, as they effortlessly continue to win over every crowd they play to. TOC have been invited to play alongside countless touring acts including Young Empires, The Arkells, Mariana's Trench, Faber Drive, Sweet Thing, Ill Scarlett, Dean Lickyer, These Kids Wear Crowns, Greater Than Giants, Acres of Lions, Hello Operator, Kiros, and Everlea.
