Bio

Phil Lesh sponsored a Phil Lesh University Master Class on November 8, 2006, and hand picked 12 musicians from across the country and beyond to join him onstage in New York City for a special, unique event. The selected musicians were divided up into two bands, and after an afternoon of "class" and rehearsal, each band performed a full set with Phil at SOB's nightclub in NYC, after an opening lecture by Phil and John Scofield on improvisation! Following the two sets, Phil and his "professional" friends then performed a third short set, capping a wonderful evening of adventure, improv, exploration, and entertainment! The evening was so successful, that Phil's other phriends pledged to take this musical gift further and explore other opportunities! Plans were immediately underway to perform together again as Phil Lesh University's Master Class Reunion Jam, which took place on Jan. 19, 2007 at The Cutting Room in New York City. The performance kicked off a weekend celebration in the Big Apple, where the American Beauty Project followed on the next two nights at the World Financial Center. The Mark Pender Band performed just prior to the PLU reunion jam, and Mr. Pender, trumpeteer extraordinaire of the Max Weinberg 7 fame (The Conan O'Brien Show Band) joined The Other Phriends onstage, performing Me and Bobby McGee as a moving tribute to celebrate Janis Joplin's birthday. Although Phil could not make the reunion, his former classmates did him proud! The Other Phriends are careful gardeners, cultivating the seeds planted by Dean Lesh. The fruit of their labor is sure to please Deadheads the world over!
