"The Particles Reviewed (English and Spanish) January 15, 2012"

There are good, cool, and awesome bands. Sadly, as the years go by, the latter have been staying that way, in the last spot, becoming almost a myth in the music industry. Unfortunately, they all end up being overshadowed by the first two, but still with a support that gives shame, but support in the end, they manage to show some of their talent to a public that’s willing to dig deep underground and find them.
In this group we find the English band The Particles. With an absolutely epic sound, energetic, brutal, exciting, provocative and yet catchy, it is difficult to give a listen and not fall at their feet.
Songs like “Taken Away” and “Voices” masterfully combine a Middle Eastern sound with a brutal, epic rock pure metal; something, you could say as we continue listening to and discovering, almost by default defines them. Others, like “Fear the Beast” and “Crusades,” do not have much of this a fore mentioned, regarding the Arabic sound, but are still able to cause the listener a pleasant eargasm.
In conclusion, for those who enjoy acts such as Lacuna Coil and Nightwitch, there’s no doubt they will enjoy this group, even to the point of stop being fan of these two great examples mentioned and give all the ovations to the incredible The Particles. Don’t wait any longer, head to http://www.the-particles.com, grab a copy of their latest album, Voices lose yourself in times and worlds unknown to the common man.

"The Particles, Voices December 15, 2011"

The Particles, released their new nine-track album, “Voices,” this past October, but in little over a month’s time, the London based band has received unprecedented notoriety from the States as well as abroad. The band members define their genre as World Music – hard rock infused with ancient Eastern instruments and three powerful vocals, led by Ash – also lead songwriter – and his two female band mates, Nayla and Sabrina. The trio describes their union as a “mystical alliance” — they each share an appreciation and desire to fuse the ancient sounds of the East and the rawness of the West’s hard rock. “Voices” is the successful result of their efforts and this vision.
The album commences with an explosion of hard rock guitar enhanced by Ancient Eastern instruments – you can hear the distinct strumming of the Sitar, the subtle sound of the Nay (an ancient flute), and the constant Def (ancient drum) holding beat until paired by the crisp vocals of Nayla and Sabrina. Aptly titled, “Crusade,” this first track establishes the mood constant throughout the album – it is soulful and yearning. The most popular track is obviously “Taken Away,” which has become a viral sensation on the Internet and the music video has been recognized at film festivals ranging from Toronto and London to Denver and LA. Despite a supposedly low budget, the music video appears to be of superior quality — think Hollywood epics like 300 or Troy – and depicts the coarse voice of crusader Ash, decked out in ancient warrior garb, struggling against the opposing mystic characters played by Nayla and Sabrina.

At times, their sound is reminiscent of Evanescence but certainly not in terms of actual narrative and execution. Their understanding of Eastern mythology and instrumentation differentiates The Particles from others similar-sounding bands. Each track is a narrative and each voice represents a character and in a sense, this album is their very journey – finding a wholeness and cohesion of all “the particles” at the end of their crusade. “Voices” is an album that is both new but nostalgic and I’m definitely interested to see what crusade this power trio takes on next. Breakthrough indie band the Particles are not only attempting to forge new paths in rock-n-roll, they are also bringing a fresh meaning to the term “world music”. Though their music is classified on the music sites as experimental rock or pop/rock, those descriptions really do not do justice to their multicultural style. And given the driving rock that infuses their sound, “world music” doesn’t quite do the band justice either. Their new EP “Voices” is a unique fusion of Western music (that would be the “rock” part) and Middle Eastern instruments and rhythms. They’ve hit the Internet music scene in a big way with their new music video “Taken Away”, which without even being publicized got tens of thousands of hits, and also during the month of November they received a number of awards and nominations for further awards in The U.S., Canada and The UK. And hot off the press: they have recently been shortlisted for “Best Rock Artist” in Hollywood.

The EP opens with a powerful thrust of raw rock guitar and Eastern instruments, enhanced by a compelling blend of three soaring voices. Those voices belong to bandleader Ash and his two female cohorts, Nayla and Sabrina, three vocalists trade lyrics in the midst of fiery hard-rock tunes. They say their goal is to stretch the boundaries of hard rock, though , not only with their hypnotic vocals but also by mixing tight guitar, bass, and drum work with traditional instruments such as the Sitar, the Daf (a large-sized frame drum), and the Ney (an end-blown flute). Some of these instruments have a history dating back more than 5,000 years; the Ney was even depicted on wall paintings in the pyramids of Ancient Egypt. The Particles album is remarkable not only musically, but also lyrically, as each singer becomes a character in the songs, drawing inspiration from mythological characters and folklore. The total effect is equally savage and sweet, brazen and erotic.

The Particles first got together in 2005 when they began work on the album “Voices”. It was the beginning of what they describe as a “mystical alliance” that continues to this very day. For the last several years they have been working hard to develop their unique sound. One of the most interesting aspects of this album, is the fact that the members of the group felt the need to complete their album using original, oriental instruments in an oriental setting and they also believed that if they hadn’t done so it would have been impossible for them to achieve their particular brand of oriental rock.

This answers the question of where they have been since their last public appearance in 2008 ( which was a successful concert) where they appeared with other big names. When asked to comment on “their disappearance”, we were told that they had felt a gapping chasm in their music which could only be filled by oriental musical influences. So, they completed their album by using authentic, ethnic instruments. They were physically drawn to Asia, where they spent a number of months discovering the beat, rhythm and instruments, and completed their recording on that continent. This meant sacrificing their audience, in order to fulfill their desire to record their music using the above mentioned authentic, ethnic instruments. They felt impelled to travel so as to create a truly different sound, in search of a unique blend of both Eastern and Western culture. Furthermore, the most interesting thing for me is they also changed their name, thereby starting from zero, like the phoenix being reborn from the ashes. And when I asked them why they had done this they replied that if they hadn’t then their fans would have expected a continuation of their “old style”. Whereas they, the group, felt a deep desire for change. In reply to my question: “Weren’t you afraid of starting from the beginning again?” Their answer was: “We believed that we had something innovative to offer. We are just waiting for a crowd of people in pursuit of something new and different. This is our first album, of this kind, and we are highly critical of our work, that’s why we have just released an EP, even though we have a complete album ready. We want to develop it step by step. And don’t forget that this is the result of 7 years hard work, this wasn’t easy for us and we have no intention of giving up without achieving our goal. We have too much riding on this project.”

After seeing their music video, what is the most remarkable aspect of “Taken away” is the breath-taking concept with huge visual effects which were, however created on an extraordinarily low budget. I found an interesting comment about their video, by one of the pundits in this industry, Andy Gesner at HipVideo writes, “You don’t need to go to the movies to experience massive blazing special effects that would make Michael Bay jealous, you don’t need to go to The Metropolitan Museum of Art to hear instruments dating back thousands of years, and you don’t need to visit Brooklyn to hear the most unique collaborations. These things can all be found in the video from the Particles entitled “Taken Away”.

"The Particles add bold new ''Voices'' to rock and world music"

New CD combines pounding rock with tantalizing Middle Eastern rhythms
North West London (MMD Newswire) August 19, 2011 - Breakthrough indie band The Particles are not only attempting to forge new paths in rock-n-roll, they're also bringing a fresh meaning to the term, "world music." Though their music is classified on the music sites as experimental rock or pop/rock, those descriptions really do not do justice to this multicultural, multinational combo of British, German, and Persian artists. And given the driving rock that infuses their sound, "world music" doesn't quite do the band justice either.

Their new CD, "Voices" is a unique fusion of Western music (that would be the "rock" part) and Middle Eastern instruments and rhythms. They've hit the Internet music scene in a big way with their new music video, "Taken Away," which has already attracted tens of thousands of hits on YouTube in couple of days after publish and is a contender for the UK Music Video Awards.
