Phantom Creeps debut CD full of raunch and roll
Thursday, 21 January 2010 16:54 Richard Amery
If Nashville Pussy or Alice Cooper were to play rockabilly instead of sleazy rock and roll, you’d have Lethbridge punk/psychobilly/ hellbilly trio the Phantom Creeps.

The Phantom Creeps have just released their self titled debut CD and it is lewd, crude and fantastic.

There is plenty of slick, raunchy Gretsch powered mayhem from former guitarist Evan Herbst throughout the CD and snarling lyrics plus intense stand up bass playing from singer Tyler Brownfield, whose voice is the perfect blend of demonic and demented, not to mention a dead ringer for Nashville Pussy singer Blaine Cartwright especially on ‘the Bottle is God.’

The lyrics are dark and disturbed, and while there is a little talk of evil, zombies and murder and monsters and eating brains, it is more punk than psychobilly.

It is also darkly catchy especially the first few, up tempo tracks ‘Cold Hearted Man,’ Route 666 and ‘Pretty Little Head.’

It slows down a bit on ‘The Bright Side,’ but not much. Ditto for ‘Dust and Blood’, whose dark lyrics are enhanced by the slower tempo and melodic solo.

Drummer Dean Wilson keeps the beat going steady throughout 40 minutes of dirty, twisted rock.
‘Hell To Pay’ has the most hellacious opening riff of the CD and a real Reverend Horton Heat feel.
Overall the Phantom Creeps will get you moving and/or moshing with their psychotic muse.

"Punk Rock, Hardcore & Ska music resource & review"

very reverend horton heat but only in small increments.these guys seem to be on the more alternative side of psychobilly but that's okay it goes well together."the bright side"is definatley not the positive rockabilly ditty you were looking for more like a negative nelly but the song is so far one of the best on the record especially in lyrics and it may just make you giggle a bit.it did for me just the way he says"bullshit, fucking bullshit, nothing ain't going to get no better no how"the whole thing just sounds so sarcastic.the phantom creeps are dark, mysterious and tight knit as a band and you can hear it.at first i wasn't a huge fan of diablo's vocals but once i got to listen deeper within the album i started to dig it more cause i knew just by listening to every track that these guys are dedicated to what they're doing as a band and well his voice just fits vocally to this sound anyways.dark lyrics, deep scratchy vocals, devious slowed down tempos, kinda sounding a bit like clutch here and there although the music is mostly dedicated to the psychobilly/rockabilly realm.come get this cause it's deadly.and this album is smoking hot it will have your creeper soles on fire as well as your ears.definatley a more diverse side of psychobilly i've ever heard and well i'd definatley listen again! best songs"route 666","pretty little head","the bright side","hell to pay",and "the bottle is god"

Phantom Creeps debut new CD

Though they have been together for less than a year, Lethbridge psychobilly trio the Phantom Creeps have come a long way. They have done 30 shows all over western Canada but most notably,

drummer Dean Wilson is excited about the Phantom Creeps’ new self titled CD.

“It’s a mixture of rockabilly, psychobilly and punk,” Wilson said of the 11 track CD which is all original material except a cover of “Bright Side” from a little known American band called Those Poor Bastards.

“Tyler (Brownfield, stand up bassist/singer) and I just finished the tracking in our top secret practice facility and took it down to Crossroads Studio for mastering,” Wilson said adding they welcomed new guitarist, Jon Vornbrock who plays with local alternative rock act, the Void, shortly after the recording was completed as they parted ways with their original guitarist, Evan Herbst, who plays on the CD.
“We knew Jon through friends from the Void and Atrophy Manuscript and wanted to play with him. So it just took one phone call and we had a guitar player,” Wilson said adding the band is pleased with the CD.

“We all work full time, so start to finish it took three to three and a half weeks to record it, which isn’t bad,” he continued adding they have been doing a fair amount of touring on weekends and have had a lot of interest in their music on Myspace and their website, http://www.phantomcreeps.com. The myspace connection lead them to a DJ in Australia who will be adding their CD to the playlist.
“ He listened to the tracks on myspace and liked them so we’re getting a CD in the mail to him this week. We’re excited about that,” Wilson added, noting they also took the band “One False Move” on tour with them and are looking forward to playing the zombie walk, Oct. 4 with the Brains. They will be going to Vancouver to play Halloween with the Deadcats, a well known rockabilly band.
“The Halloween show will be sold out. It’s a big show for us. We’re looking forward to it. And the Deadcats are trying to get us a gig in Victoria as well,” he enthused.
They are also looking forward to a Sept. 11 show in Edmonton with Eve hell and the Razors, the Benders and the Raygun Cowboys.

"Album Review"

This is a pretty baddass full length debut with a psychobilly-meets-Social D sound. Tyler Brownfield's upright bass gets a mean workout over these 11 tracks. They've clearly got the genre down, with songs about drinking, misery, and I'm assuming hotrods/those Bettie Page pinup types who tore your heart/hell etc. For an independent release the sound is surprisingly well mixed or something. Really, any album with a cover featuring "a naked women on her knees with batwings and holding a snake above her head" can't be bad.

Bio

The Phantom Creeps are just three guys hell-bent on wreaking havoc on the Psychobilly/Rockabilly world. Blending Rockabilly, Punk, Country, Psychobilly and good ole' fashioned Rock into their own brand of Hellbilly Rock and Roll, they have established themselves as a band to be reckoned with! Summer 2011 brings the new release of "Hellbilly Rebel Fire" released by indie label Psycho-a-go-go records. The Creeps have garnered much attention in the Psychobilly & Punk scene by sharing the stage with such heavyweights as The Guana Batz, The Creepshow, The Brains, Big John Bates, The Deadcats, The Raygun Cowboys and numerous other bands. Indie radio play is coming fast and furious with stations from Canada, U.S., The U.K. and Australia all getting on board. Tight, energetic live performances and great album reviews such as a recent one in Absolute Underground magazine are only fuelling the fire.
