"The Prevues"

As soon as the jangly guitars of ‘The Teenage’ begin The Strokes circa ‘Is This It’ comes to mind. But it isn’t The Strokes we’re listening to, it’s NKOTB The Prevues. Having only formed in March this year, they’ve pulled together some impressive tracks for their Facebook page (three of which will appear on their first demo).

Lead singer Matt Beahan’s voice is described as channelling the ‘lazy drawl and jagged phrasing’ of Lou Reed so it really isn’t any surprise how much he sounds like Julian Casablancas. Say what? We hear you say, well JC has often talked about the heavy influence the Velvet Underground had on him (it was pretty much all he listened to and tried to emulate) during the recording process of their first album. But let’s not pigeonhole The Prevues too early, there’s also a hint of Stephen Malkmus of Pavement fame to Beahan’s vocal stylings, and a something else you can’t quite place.

‘The Teenage’, ‘Traces of Your Love’ and ‘Got No Soul’ are all tracks you’ll want to listen to again and again. Their sound is already so polished that we can’t wait to hear what comes out of the studio when they get into a more in depth recording process later in the year.

My tarot cards are telling me these guys are going to gain a strong following in the coming months and also that you should take our advice and go listen to them.

Bio

The Prevues are a Perth band delivering indie pop and cave dwelling harmonies straight to your ears. Their songs focus on rolling bass lines intertwined with jangly guitars and brooding keys building towards elevated crescendos. Lead singer Matt Beahan takes on a Lou Reed vibe with his lazy drawl and jagged phrasing as he sing about broken romance and life in this modern age.

Since forming in 2011 they have been working hard both on stage and off honing their brand of indie pop and perfecting their sound. In their short history they have managed to play alongside some of Perth’s top indie bands including The Autumn Isles, The Morning Night and Rainy Day Women.

The Prevues sound shows glimpses of The Strokes and Television but they also have some slower, darker ballads that place their sound in a whole different genre, comparable to indie darlings Girls. The real stand out for the band is their ability to blend a range of influences across the decades of indie rock without being pigeonholed into one type of sound.

Drum Media on The Prevues.... “New kids on the block The Prevues are creating a brand of indie rock that blends modern influences such as The Strokes with the style and pop of retro bands like Television and The Kinks. The result is a diverse sound that ranges from catchy indie pop to emotional ballads with swirling guitars and keyboard arrangements. Their radio-friendly vibe is particularly evident in the track The Teenage, which was well received by the audience who applauded with enthusiasm.”
