"Primitive Spirit"

"One key to the early Airplane's success was the vocal blend of co-founders Marty Balin and Paul Kantner, along with Signe Anderson, the original female singer. The combination of two men and one woman worked effectively to the point where it became a template for other folk-rock groups to follow.
So it's with high praise that I compare the sound of the Primatives to that of the Airplane. The trio-basically features three lead singers, a distinctive touch in a day when most bands seem to lean toward one front man (or woman)." - Harry Funk (Washington Observer Reporter)

The Primatives Release Primitive Spirit

Pittsburgh, PA, December, 2006
The Primatives, an alternative rock/folk band from Southwest Pennsylvania and the West Virginia Panhandle, present a CD, “Primitive Spirit”. This is a very unique collection of spiritually inspired material by a diverse group of musicians of exceptional creativity.

Primitive Spirit is a big change from the bands first CD, "The Lovers of Kali Yuga", in that they have taken a more "organic" and acoustic approach to it. However, it is not completely acoustic, as "variety is a tasty spice with us". Also, we believe it is coming from a more comfortable place, spiritually, with certainly less "relationship anguish" in songwriter Jesse's life.

Primitive Spirit includes some of the bands often requested material such as "The Ocean of Phenomena", in which the world is seen as a form of art by the Master Artist, "Livin" ("i won't be livin, this life that i've been given"), and "Simple Love" ("tell the story of simple love")
"We are very excited about this project, because it is to represent us as we are. We have way more material to record and have also begun work on a 3rd CD."

We invite you to listen to 3 of the tracks from Primitive Spirit by clicking the AUDIO tab at the top of this page.

“Primitive Spirit" is a creative, organic folk rock CD by The Primatives. The tracks on the CD are very acoustic, spiritual and earthy. Various percussive instruments and flute fills are nicely used to add depth to the sound of the primarily clean guitar sound. The strength of the CD lies in the meaningful songwriting that is brought to life by this distinctive organic sound, combined with the tasteful yet complex 3-part harmonies. Track 6, called Pyare, has a typical sound of the CD, and is one of our favorite tracks because the harmonies and flute fills blend particularly well on this track. The guitar work throughout the CD is impressive, especially the acoustic guitar licks in Sorry. The CD breathes fresh life into a very 60s folk rock sound that will remind you of bands such as Crosby Stills Nash and Young and The Grateful Dead. If you enjoy folk rock, especially the legendary folk rock artists of the 60s, you will enjoy this CD. Pick up a copy today!

"...this record serves up such strongly produced and menacingly tranquil interpretations. Primitive Spirit is a truly spectacular offering. It stays true to its name -- no overblown theatrics or flash-pan modernities. But really it's not primitive in a musical sense. Well, I mean, it is primitive in that it presents us with a no-yucko, no-gimmicks, solid set of straight-forward and heartfelt folk-rock-acoustic-electric-world music...

Lyrics for me are the key to great music and The Primatives deliver in this category for sure. This album is the one that asks the important question, "Who's been livin' you?"
I feel like Jesse is one of the few artists who writes things that I can actually understand on a literal level. What I mean by that is when I listen to I'm Trying or Simple Love, I think I'm getting Jesse's actual message. People usually cake their music in pure poetics. Poetics are important, but there's a line to cross where you go from having sensical songs to having word jumbles.
Truly a worthwhile album to hear and experience. It'll make you feel like you're floating towards enlightenment while on a nature walk. Totally honest music.

Bio

We feel that the Primatives fill a niche that is surely needed in today’s entertainment venues. We offer adults new sophisticated music with thoughtful lyrics in the spirit of the great folk/rock groups of the late sixties through the seventies, for enjoyment at intimate venues.

The Primatives are an inspired-primitive-alternative rocking folk band with subtle expressions of our own individual spirituality. The band is the result of my lifetime of song writing and the mutual attraction between myself and my wife, Lila.
We are in search of an appropriate booking agent to assist us in acquiring quality engagements, and are requesting the opportunity to be considered by any qualified organization as potential clients.
Our local area is primarily Pittsburgh, PA through the West Virginia Panhandle, however we are interested in pursuing venues within approximately a 150 mile radius. For the most part we are involved in coffee house venues, some bars, restaurants, and local festivals and benefits, etc. We currently host a twice per month open stage at The Coffee Den in Mt. Lebanon, PA, which makes a very positive contribution to the community.
My wife’s and my vocals are supported by our Pittsburgh native friend, Jack on vocals and electric bass, and now also by our daughter, Audrey, with added vocals and percussion. So as you can see, The Primatives are a very "vocal" group! We take a flexible and “organic” approach to our performing which allows us to be intimate and dynamic with our music.
We will appreciate your time and consideration.
-Jesse, Lila, Jack, and Audrey

"The Primatives feature a blend of rock with eclectic influences of folk stylings and Indian rhythms. Jesse Hanson's melodic vocals and song lines are well-matched with pulsating, energetic guitar. These songs drive the point straight home in a style reminiscent of the influential Neil Young.

The songs are supported by Jesse's wife, Lila, who adds her own multi-cultural influence with percussive instruments and the flute and by Jack on bass whose musical interests range from folk to Dave Brubeck. They both add nicely balanced supportive vocals. The energy between Lila and Jesse feels magical."

"Hey, I just saw you at the Coffee Den. That was a superb show. I loved the intimacy of it too, it reminded me a lot of when I saw CSN at the Palumbo Center since that was a pretty small concert arena, and I was relatively close. I'm about to buy the CD. I know I'll love it, because I can recognize some of the song titles. You could also release a live CD, that'd be awesome. I can't wait to see you play again."
-Doug D. (musician and fan)

"I recently had the pleasure of booking the group known as “The Primatives” for a large fund raiser. It was an altogether very enjoyable experience, both in my dealing with Jesse and Lila Hanson and then attending the performance! I had arranged to have them perform after only listening to one of their CDs and had not at that time hea
