The Profits

BandPopAcoustic

The Profits are an acoustic rock band from Madison, WI. With a sound like John Mayer and Jack Johnson with an award-winning vocal twist, they have been packing venues in Madison and establishing a sizeable following on campuses throughout the Midwest and Northeast.

Biography

QUESTION: What do you get when you mix a phenomenally successful Madison band called The Profits with a top New York producer -- one who's recorded Grammy winners John Mayer and the Dave Mathews Band?

ANSWER: You get the story of a band that is becoming a self-made nationwide phenomenon.

Their success is unprecedented in the Midwest. With no help from a label, booking or management team, they packed the 1,300 seat Orpheum Theater in Madison last month -- something that many national acts are unable to do. Attracting top level attention and throngs of fans (and a 900-plus member street team), The Profits were approached by media like The Onion and Triple M Radio, asking if they could sponsor the band which, all media agrees, is the Midwest's top acoustic rock band.

Even more impressive, Doug Derryberry (John Alagia's partner) and member of the Bruce Hornsby band came and heard The Profits, and immediately asked to produce their latest album, "Far from You and Your Everyday Noise." Recorded in Smart Studios (Garbage, Fall Out Boy, Nirvana), "Everyday Noise" showcases the explosive spectrum of depth, texture, arrangements, and three-part vocals for which the band is becoming so widely known.

And widely known, indeed. The Profits' music went national last month: three of their songs are included on EA Sports' NCAA Football 2005. Further, their website traffic passed 1 million requests a month, their national Profiteer fan club has well over 900 registered members with thousands more unregistered, and their music is featured on websites all over the world.

Public reaction to the Profits speaks for itself: After selling out Luther's Blues repeatedly—an unheard-of feat for unsigned bands—they won Best Overall Artist and Best Acoustic Artist in the Madison Area Music Awards, and have begun to open for national acts like The Violent Femmes, Blessid Union of Souls, and Blue Merle.

And it doesn't hurt that the band members are handsome, educated, intellectual, hilariously funny, warm, and interactive on stage, and give superb interviews. The Profits is comprised of former UW students JP Roney (songwriter/ vocals/ guitar/ keyboards), Mike Droho (songwriter/vocals/guitar), Scott Lamps (songwriter/ vocals/ stand up classical bass), and Benjamin Schaefer (percussion).

London Rain

Written By: John Paul Roney

London Rain

Its funny how the smile in your eyes
Is slowly fading with the last days in July
The year is drowning like the calendar grows thin
You’ll sail away again with your back against the wind

When the cold wind blows you’re gone
And I will hold me head again
But you can’t run from the truth
Of London rain

Please send me beaches when my world is cold and weak
And press me flowers in the pages of the diaries you keep
It still won’t fill the spot beside me in the bed where you sleep
As the calendar repeats

When the cold wind blows you’re gone
And I will hold me head again
But you can’t run from the truth
Of London rain

Say it like you mean it
A last look of summer on your face
I swear I’ll believe that someday you will stay
I can take or leave it, I’ll take it anywhere with you.

Last rains are falling on the first days of June.

High Horse

Written By: Mike Drohomyreky and John Paul Roney

The flowers I brought you, the breakfasts in bed
Fingertip kisses, sweet nothings I said, to you meant nothing
alone again.
Would he lay down his coat over mud and the rain?
Hold doors open for you?
Wait up till you’re in?
Call to remind you he’s thinking of you?
There’s so many kisses left for you and I to discuss.

But,

High up on your horse you don’t see what it has taken to make me.
You’re looking down now,
down on me.
High up on your horse you don’t see what you so soon shall be missing.
You’re looking down now,
down on me.

How could with the same mouth hat you kissed me
to everyone have dissed me,
leaving me a joke among your vanity brigade?
You’re running from a future that won’t look good in a frame,
leaving you regretful of your choice to me refrain.
All of the things that your father can buy cant embrace you,
cannot shake you, kiss you and give you goose bumps on your neck like I used to.

High up on your horse you don’t see what it has taken to make me.
You’re looking down now,
down on me.
High up on your horse you don’t see what you so soon shall be missing.
You’re looking down now,
down on me.

Sex at Six

Written By: John Paul Roney

Well I wake up in the mornin' and the sun it starts to shine.
Oh I be lookin' at my baby and baby shes lookin' fine.
Oh at times like these theres only one thing on my mind.

That I like sex at six in the morning
sex at six cannot be boring.
Gonna roll over to you and get you moanin'.
I like like sex at at six in the morning.
How bout a little sex at six in the morning with you?

Well I don't need no waffles to start my day,
and you can tell the boys at Folgers to go away.
Cause the best part of waking up
is a little bit of sex at six in your cup.

Cause I like sex at six in the morning
sex at six cannot be borin.
Gonna roll over to you and get you moanin.
I like like sex at at six in the morning.
How bout a little sex at six in the morning with you?

You are my sunshine, oh my only sunshine.
Makes me so happy to hear you say
"Hey sugar daddy, you know I love you.
Won't you please come roll over my way?"

I like sex at six in the morning
sex at six cannot be boring.
Gonna roll over to you and get you moanin.
I like like sex at at six in the morning.
How bout a little sex at six in the morning with you?
