"The Purple Doors to perform Friday at White Hall"

"The Purple Doors, a local praise band, will perform a casual concert for contemporary Christian music enthusiasts and coffeehouse patrons at 6:00PM Friday in Churchill's Coffee in Woodlands Plaza at White Hall.

Sponsored by Lakeside United Methodist Church of Pine Bluff, the group members deliver their message through the universal language of music. The group's calling is to minister to persons of all ages and walks of life, according to a spokesman for the group.

"Music is our mission. Hope and faith are our message," said Phil Wesson, a singer/songwriter and instrumentalist for the group. The group plays each Sunday at The Gathering, Lakeside's contemporary worship service. They also perform frequently at prisons, youth homes, nursing homes, hospitals, summer camps and other worship services when requested.

"We especially enjoy taking music to persons who wouldn't otherwise be able to be in church due to their circumstances. A lot of people are unable to get out and attend church, much less a praise concert," Wesson said.

The Purple Doors' diverse musical style appeals to audiences of all ages, the spokesman said. Loosely classified as contemporary Christian, the band tailors its acoustic folk-rock music interwoven with traditional spiritual sounds to suit each audience.

"We certainly don't look at our music as a replacement for traditional church music, but rather an added musical dimension to the delivery of the message," according to Dave Sadler, The Purple Doors' guitarist. "Music is a great communication tool that can be used to lift us all above the differences that set us apart."

The band has been quite busy "communicating" lately. Since June of last year, The Purple Doors has played for a total of 63 separate worship and music events.

"The schedule has kept us all fairly busy, considering that we each have to balance the demands of careers, and families, with our musical mission," Sadler said. "Fortunately, we get a lot of support from friends, family members and Lakeside."

The Purple Doors' upcoming schedule includes events in Pine Bluff, Little Rock and Maumelle. In August, The Purple Doors will play at the 31st annual Hope Watermelon Festival.

In December. The Purple Doors released its debut, self-titled compact disc, "The Purple Doors." The CD recording sessions were held in the basement of Lakeside between June and October. Track 5 of the CD features the Vacation Bible School children of Lakeside and First United Methodist Churches of Pine Bluff singing a stirring rendition of "Alleluia-A-Alleluia" which concludes with the jubilant praise of the accompanying children.

The CD, which was independently produced, mixed and mastered by The Purple Doors and Purple Door Records, has garnered commendations from the contemporary Christian music community, the spokesman said.

Members of The Purple Doors include: Susan Coles, Briana McNeill and Karen Wesson, all vocalists; Stuart Coles, bass; Jesse Rocha, percussion; Phil Wesson, Dave Sadler and Leeann Sadler, all vocals/guitar; and Virginia Sadler, vocals/keyboard. They are assisted by various family members serving as crew members.

"Message at the Charge Conference 11/19/06"

November 19, 2006 Charge Conference

"I have one answer that responds to any of the three questions posed. You may choose the question.

The Lakeside United Methodist Church praise band – The Purple Doors – has been an open and outward expression of our church’s love for Christ and our love for those in need of Christ.

The members of The Purple Doors are all active members of Lakeside Church. Over the past year they have volunteered countless hours to practice and perform for both our Sunday contemporary services and for various services in our city and state. This year alone, they have led praise services at:
Southeast Arkansas Punishment Center (women’s prison)
Methodist Children’s Home
Methodist Family Health Residential Treatment Center
Mi Casa worship service (Lakeside’s Hispanic ministry)
Arkansas Cares (Little Rock)
Camp Tanako
Trinity Village vespers service
Methodist Behavioral Hospital in Maumelle
The combined 1st Methodist and Lakeside Vacation Bible School
Faith United Methodist Church celebration service

Matthew 25: 39-40 – “And when did we see thee sick or in prison and visit thee? And the King will answer them, ‘Truly, I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these my brethren, you did it to me.”

As you can see, this is a program that reaches out to those needing Christ’s love, without asking anything in return.
Christ has been shared…
Persons have grown in discipleship…
Hurts have been healed…

The members of The Purple Doors are: Phil and Karen Wesson, Dave Sadler, Virginia Sadler, Susan Coles, Stuart Coles, Briana McNeill, Jesse Rocha. Various family members assist in the production."

Our music has influences from the South ranging from gospel to contemporary and country to rock. The acoustic blends and rhythms reflect the musical roots and talents of these "purple folks" from Ark., Tenn., Tex. and Ala.
