"The Pygmies S/T - Review"

Ten tunes of rocking, slightly snotty garagey pop punk from this fantastic Calgary, Alberta band. Featuring members of the vastly underrated Neckers from that same city, the Pygmies have done a fabulous job with their debut release. Slightly less power pop-sounding than the Neckers, but leaning heavily into good pop punk with a garage feel, one of my favorite sounds to be sure. Some may want to note that Brendan from the Pygmies was a member of Chixdiggit! and played on their most recent EP on Fat. This could not come any more recommended for fans of everything from Real Kids to Groovie Ghoulies. Cannot wait to hear more from this phenomenal Canadian band! –Mike Frame (Sloth) - Razorcake

Bio

The Pygmies are a crossbreed of 60's garage rock and 70's punk. Starting out in 2011 as a two piece guitar and drums combo they eventually expanded to a four piece with the addition of organ and bass. The band writes simple, catchy rock n roll songs which charm the audience for a minute and thirty seconds at a time.

The founders, Jim Blood (guitar) and Brendan Tincher (drums), are veterans of the Calgary music scene and have played in bands such as The Neckers, The Ronnie Hayward Trio, Miesha & The Spanks and The Cripple Creek Fairies. The addition of Kenna Burima (Woodpigeon, Brenda Vaqueros) on keyboards and Ryan Lottermoser (Restive Hands) has given the band a fuller sound, with four part harmonies, trashy organs, and a pounding rhythm section.

The Pygmies freshman album released in March 2012, is a self titled scorcher that blasts your eardrums with 8 short, poppy garage songs and two garage rock ballads reminiscent of The Kinks mixed with The Real Kids.

In the winter of 2012 the band released a split flexi-disk with local garage punk band, The Fags. The disk was released on the Save by Vinyl label. The Pygmies also released a free Christmas EP on their Bandcamp page.

In early 2013 the band retreated back into the garage to record their second full length album, scheduled for release early this summer. A new track, Inside Your Mind, will be included on the Beatroute Garage Compilation that should be available just in time for Sled Island. The band made a video for the song which can be viewed on their Sonic Bids bio.
