Bio

The Quiet and the Loud are Ken Kusama and Michael Aquino. They met in a library (much to The Quiet’s approval) in March of 2010.

Ken Kusama started his musical journey as a drummer in the suburban foothills of Landing, NJ listening to likes of Jimmy Eat World, No Knife and Sunny Day Real Estate. Through his immersion in the local music scene as a drummer he took a liking to the guitar, discovered open tunings and has not turned back! (Although he threatens to write a song in standard tuning soon!). If you were to sit in his car nowadays you’d probably hear Owen, Jen Wood or Death Cab for Cutie playing from his stereo.

Michael Aquino grew up on the urban streets of Union City, NJ in a Cuban/Puerto Rican household. Not only was there salsa and jibaro music constantly playing but also Prince, Jim Croce, early house and techno music and the seminal rap album De La Soul’s “Three Feet High and Rising” (to name a few). In 2002, Michael began teaching himself guitar and writing his own music. He took the plunge in 2006 performing his original tunes in the NJ/NY area. Jeff Buckley, Ani DiFranco, Rogue Wave and The Roots seem to be some of his recent (and not so recent) obsessions.

A typical The Quiet and The Loud show includes a small drum kit (that dwarfs jazz kits) and two acoustic guitars. Their songs range from hush lyrical soundscapes to rhythmic, raucous sci-fi adventures.

Michael Aquino: “Sometimes you find the quiet in very loud moments and sometimes you want to scream in the quiet ones. The boundaries between the two are sometimes seamless.”

Ken Kusama: “The Quiet and The Loud is how two different dynamics come together and convey the same feeling to the listener.”

Places they’ve played: Boro 6 Indie Music Festival, Sign Interpreted Concert Series, Luna Stage, Maggie Moores, Alley Way Concert Series (Staten Island), Bike Art Show in Morristown, Tasty CoCo, Indie Music Circus.
