"Woodford Festival Review"

“We booked The Quills as part of our emerging artist program at 2007/08 Woodford Folk Festival, we picked The Quills initially for their quality recording through our application process of which there were over 140.

To our surprise they performed with energy, quality lyrics, well structured music and great dynamics. Their reputation grew along with their audiences throughout the festival. The band performances showed a maturity much greater than so many bands older and more experienced. We will most certainly be booking The Quills again. I give this band my hearty recommendation”

"Radio 4ZzZ Reference"

"The Quills have been kicking about the Brissie music scene making a
name for themselves, I'd heard their name but hadn't heard their music
until Some New Place was released. This EP is an absolutely  pleasure
to listen too, relaxing yet interesting. Pop opener Skyward  is definitely a radio favourite, gentle but exciting, I really enjoy  the drums in this song and the finish leaves me craving more. In My  Veins is absolutely beautiful and I adore the simplicity of this  track especially the piano. The build up is amazing and I can  guarantee that you will be whistling the chorus all day long. A very  mature and polished debut.

The Quills are very passionate and it's infectious. I invited them to play a live song when they joined me on air before their EP launch.
They rocked up on the day with a piano, double bass, guitar and a snare drum! We could barely move in the tiny studio but honestly it was definitely one of the best live to airs....kudos to The Quills :) " - Tiffany Dimmack - 4ZzZ

"'Some New Place' (EP) - The Quills (Independent)"

The debut release from local act 'The Quills' is filled with piano driven pop-rock tunes and heartfelt lyrics, courtesy of singer Dave Butler's sweet pop voice.

'Some New Place' is very tight for a debut release. As long as they resist the compromise of the commercial calling, The Quills could be on a winner. Watch this space.

"The Quills - EP Launch - The Globe Theatre, 13th Dec 2007"

There's standing room only on The Globe's sloped floor as the crowd thickens for The Quills' debut EP launch. Tonight's full attendance can be attributed to a genuinely accessible, enjoyable pop-rock sound.

Call-and-response solos between guitarist Dave Butler and keyboardist Andrew Stone provide the set's most thrilling moments. Stone's excellent keytar work on Skyward presents several compelling reasons why the instrument belongs in the 21st century.

Make no mistake, their new disc, Some New Place, offers strong songs and have once again drawn attention to the breadth and depth of Brisbane's musical talent pool.

"The Quills @ Princess Theatre, Brisbane, 25 Oct 2008"

The Princess Theatre - Sat Oct 25

It’s an early start to a Saturday night, but then 18-plus and all-ages gigs are hardly the same thing, and what Woolloongabba’s Princess Theatre lacks in common live venue attributes (no bar) is compensated for by rich acoustics. Playing to a predominantly teenage crowd, Brisbane’s ‘next big things’ The Quills transform the already sizeable venue into an arena with a swirling synth intro and a tight set of tunes tailor-made for FM radio. Clean-cut frontman Dave Butler is both in strong voice and firm control of his white Fender Stratocaster and despite evident Coldplay/U2/Keane stylings, the confidence-radiating band cannot be faulted for their enthusiasm, being met with teenybopper cheers.

"The Quills Rock The Zoo"

The Quills Rock The Zoo - http://blog.musicadium.com/featured-artist/the-quills-rock-the-zoo/360/

Musicadium faves the Quills have experienced some great successes since their conception, but show no evidence of rock star arrogance or a complacent attitude toward their fans. Their humble approach to creating brilliantly crafted music belies their talent, as they could afford to put on rock star airs but thankfully choose not to.

Long time Musicadium friends, we believe the Quills have an exciting future ahead of them due to their talent and also to their intelligent use of online marketing tools. They played at the infamous Brisbane venue The Zoo this week to kick of their South East QLD tour. Check out their myspace here and their debut EP ‘Some New Place’ which debuted at the # 1 position on the 4ZZZ charts when it was released.

Bio

The Quills have a sound unique to contemporary music. With tightly controlled rhythms underpinning layers of electro-synth, and vivid, sincere vocals, The Quills create fresh, modern Australian alternative pop.

The Quills have earned a reputation for outstanding live performance. Close on the heels of their headlining spring 2008 tour of South-East Queensland, The Quills recently made their second appearance at the popular Woodford Folk Festival to overflowing venues. In the past year The Quills have also supported both emerging and established artists like Sparkadia and Operator Please, and received national airplay on taste making radio station Triple J.

The Quills’ self-produced, independently released EP Some New Place (2007) debuted at No. 1 on the charts at local Brisbane radio station 4ZzZ, and went on to sell more than 1000 units from shows and web exposure alone. In 2008, The Quills followed the EP with their independently released live CD/DVD, A Thought In Your Head, documenting the first show of their similarly named spring tour at landmark Brisbane venue, The Zoo.

The band’s immediate plans are focused on expanding their audience, with national and international touring planned. The Quills will have a presence at South by South-West in Austin, Texas, and with pre-production already underway for their next release, 2009 for The Quills looks both busy and bright.
