The RAILS are a female-fronted Mod trio with a very cool, vintage sound. They play original music, are independent and, they have something to say.

Biography

A Brief Band History
THE RAILS

The Rails are a Toronto based mod trio. The band was formed in 2001 and has recently released their debut 3 song EP called, simply, “Introducing the Rails.”

After year one we decided to begin the process of recording our band. We spoke to the Toronto producer, Rob Sanzo, who agreed to take on the project after hearing our material.

One of Rob’s suggestions in this pre-production phase was to change our keyboard in order to incorporate more of a classic rock sound. Until then we had not had an objective professional opinion about our music.

The drummer for the trio is Hem Advani. He plays in a deceivingly relaxed fashion but somehow manages to be one of the loudest drummers out there. If you are up there on stage next to him you really feel it in your knees.

Nick plays electric guitar. His riffing style is simple and strong. He uses two sounds, clean and dirty. His playing reflects the main chords of the song. Nick is the primary song writer and lyricist for the group.

Louise on keyboards switches between Hammond organ, Rhodes piano and clavicle sounds. Early experience as a trumpet player in a school orchestra gave her an ear for arrangements and harmony.

Most of what Louise plays on keyboard is a counter melody she has written to accompany the guitar chording. Louise is also the lead singer for the band and her vocals are notable for their clear enunciation.

We want our lyrics to be heard because our songs tell stories. We often write about the rock and roll world using different scenarios as metaphors to describe more universal human experiences.

Girls' Night Out

Wish I was nicer when I first met you
Because I really like you now
Our best friends are friends with each other
And so we met on a girl’s night out

(Chorus)

Turns out we like a lot of the same things
Both our favourite colour is royal blue
Our party purses are ready to go
Got some free passes for this Friday’s show

We like dancing and going out late
And unless we’re on a date
Going to the movies on Saturday night
Is not exactly our kind of fun

(Chorus & bridge)

We would really like to find good men
We dress so fine to attract them
Wonder where they are, where do they go?
I don’t think they’re under any disco ball

They won’t be wearing socks with their sandals
Or smoking a cigar
We have no idea when we will meet them
Until then let’s head to the bar

(Chorus & bridge)

We go to nightclubs and dance with each other
Though we’d really rather dance with men!
We get a little flirty and smile at them
And some of them will ask us “what’s your name?”

I wish I was nicer when I first met you
Because I truly like you now
Now we’re good friends with each other
And that’s because of the girl’s nights out.
-----
Keys and money
Everybody ready
Lipstick’s on now let’s catch a cab

Girl’s night out
Everybody ready
Where do you feel like going tonight?

The Show

THE SHOW

Everybody gets into the show
All having seats in the front row
Should we turn it off you say no
What you will see you already know

Everyone gets up on the stage
Read about them on the front page
Give everyone a microphone
Tell their story, send it home

Welcome to the show of all shows
Tales of triumph and sorrow
So let’s hear what you’ve got to say
How did you come to be here today

What’s the story you want to tell
Let’s see the picture you want to show
What is the thing you want to remember
Where you want to go we will go

Introducing …..what’s the name of your band again?
Tonight we give you ….. what d’you say you were called?
Describe your music. Who are you like?
What category would you say it was?

Coming to you from ….. where’d you say you come from again?
Allow me to present ….. what d’you say you were called?
Image is a must. What do you look like?
Are you willing to change the colour of your hair?
Allow me to present ….. my ignorance
Allow me to put in ….. my two cents
Come on make some noise I can't hear you at all.
They came a very long way to be here whoever they are.
