When people think of summer in southern New Jersey, live reggae comes to mind as fast as sand, sunshine, surfing and the shore. More places are following the lead of The Inlet in Somers Point, Shenanigans in Sea Isle City and Cabanas Beach Bar and Grill in Cape May by offering either a weekly live reggae night or adding the genre as part of its vacation season musical mix.
On a recent Tuesday evening at Shenanigans, the group Therapy entertained indoors at the 450-person capacity bar with its mix of reggae, soca, Latin, dance and funk music.
During its first set, a woman jumped on stage and danced with lead vocalist Keith Prescott as he sang the Bob Marley classic "Waiting in Vain."
"Most Tuesdays, we don't miss it. ... The bands are always good here," says Katie Bitz, who has been coming to Shenanigans with friends for the past five years.
Therapy has been performing on average twice a month at Shenanigans for the past three years. The band has been together for 12 years in its current incarnation, which helps explain why they are such a good live act.
"Even though its Tuesday, it's like a weekend. The crowds are nice. We bring them up on stage. It's surprising on a Tuesday night," Prescott says.
Bill Young, the manager at Shenanigans, says his father made the decision about 15 years ago to offer live reggae on Tuesdays, but it took a couple of years to catch on.
"It's easy, fun music to dance to, and it attracts more women than any other night," Young says.
