"On the Scene"

8 p.m. Friday:The Reason Your Listening at Headliners. Aside from the grammatical error in its name, this Columbia band gets a lot right in songs such as “Circles,” which has an obvious and catchy chorus. The rapping — with lyrics like “I’m digging her like she’s dirt / And I’m the shovel” — are hopelessly dipped in cheese, but that is essential for radio aspirations. With The Essentials. This is part of Rock 93.5’s Friday Night Live series. Headliners is at 700 Gervais St. $6 - Otis Taylor

"Christmas is Here"

Speaking of Christmas concerts, The Loose Cockaboose holds one of its own — its annual Kristmas Karma Party — on Saturday, a benefit for the Harvest Hope Food Bank. We’ll remind you again that the Christmas season is a time for giving, and that Sir Paul McCartney once sang that the love you take was equal to the love you make. (Sure, he might have been talking about makin’ whoopee, but it works in other contexts.) With that in mind, your keister should be parked at the Cockaboose starting at 5 p.m., and the $7 admission charge — which, we remind you, benefits Harvest Hope — feeds your face with food and your soul with rich, filling philanthropic goodness. Oh, there’ll also be treats for your ears as well, as no fewer than five local performers take the stage: Singer-songwriter Justin Petrey; local jam-rock favorites Almost Jason; funky party rockers Modern Disruption; Southern soul sensations Joe Tucker and the Class of 99 ½; and The Reason Your Listening, a modern-day melting pot of alternative hip-hop and acoustic rock. (Think: Flobots.) Good music plus a good cause? That, friends, equals a good time. Call 251-3485 for more information - Patrick Wall
