In a Canadian arthouse rock ’n’ road-trip movie, The Recroom would be the band squatting in a dilapidated but beautiful shanty by the side of Highway 60, where their haunting but curiously assertive songs would lure the itinerant protagonist out of his beaten-up Kia Sportage and into the liminal indie underworld that catalyzed his personal transformation. The songs on the Oshawa trio’s Wake Up the City disc are a lovely mass of nicely scarred basement post-punk guitars, murky bass and steady percussion, given an added jolt by subtle hints of Cuff the Duke–style twang and the hypnotic power of Jackie Game’s captivating vocals. The singer/guitarist is a chameleon, suggesting the robotic slinkiness of Emily Haines one second, pulling off a raw aggro Liz Powell (Land of Talk) the next, and winding down with a perfectly gorgeous Jolie Holland–style siren act on the countryish lullaby “Fire Escape." - Eye Weekly Magazine (Dec. 5/07)

The Recroom : Wake Up The City

And what shall wake up this city... what shall you hear should you place and play this trio from the Shwa?

Eerie swamp blues played by forest-dwelling voodoo dudes harassed by pesky kids in magic mystery vans, headlights picking the swift shadows, trundling over potholes and stumpy roots, the tunnel vision of a late night drive, the plaintive sensual cool breeze vocals of Jackie Game.

The psychotic timbres of the house on the hill, shuttered, peeling, flakes, the burning rumble of Angel-fed bass felt under the floorboards. Paintings with eyes that track.

Doors clattered and creaking, a thudding from the garage, the steady, reliable tricked-out primal rhythms of Sarah Felgemacher instills an uneasy feeling that came stealing over. The dark corners draw the kids closer, only to reach for support.

The unmasked man smoking the microfilters unmasks the others. The able reveal the stories slowly, one haunting still moment at a time lurking in the grungy slippery shoddy pools that glisten in the cracked moon halflight.

The sound of basements from the grates of the city with grace and pity. Our world underground pulsing through the strings, a musical Northern Lights, shimmering curtains over the dulled city and the children gaze shoewards.

There is beauty in the beaten laneways and brilliance behind the bricks. There is community built on chemistry where the stains of graffiti wear thin. Look beyond the city wails, search out the lovely in the low income lonely, hold it. Take your chances. Look a crazy horse in the mouth. Gather up the gifts given. Push open the tarnished door to the recroom and step through to the other side.

And that... that's what I heard. But you?
