"Best of 2010 – Norwegian style"

Therese Aune is one of the new names that I hope will reach a bigger audience in 2010. She has not yet released an album, but was a part of the fine ‘Oslo 2’ compilation, released by a young, but important pop label in Oslo, SpoonTrainAudio. Her stunningly beautiful music is mostly based on her strong, expressive voice accompanied by a piano. Sometimes she adds toy instruments and other sounds to her recordings. I take a lot of photos as a hobby, and Therese Aune’s music gives me kind of the same feeling as when I discover the beauty and the “art-like” in something old, decayed and “ugly”. There is a depth there, there is something so beautiful in the things that are not perfect, the things that are partly broken or rusty. Aune’s music is a bit rusty and broken, but that’s what makes it perfect for me.

Bio

Therese Aune (NO) plays dreamy filmatic music, drawing inspiration both from pop music and classical minimalists. She herself plays piano and sings, but she usually plays concerts with violin (Hanna Furuseth), cello (Katrine Schiøtt), accordion (Ida Løvli Hidle), tuba (Heida Karine Mobeck) and drums (Hans Hulbækmo). Together they create evocative soundscapes that can be subdued and quiet, but also grow big and heavy when they need to. All though the music at times can be rather massive, it never turns bombastic. There is always room for little details, playfulness and improvisation within the arrangements. Aune also has a characteristic and expressive voice. When the different personalities of the band come together, they form a unique common expression. So far the music has taken Aune to festivals like By:larm (NO), Øyafestivalen (NO) Popkomm (DE), Berlin Festival (DE) and Iceland Airwaves (ICE). Last fall she brought her band to the studio and recorded what will be her debut album together with the Icelandic producer Mio Þórisson (Owen Pallett, Bonnie 'Prince' Billy, Skuli Sverrison). The album will be released on the Norwegian indie label Riot Factory on November 9th 2012.
