"Sean Reefer and the Resin Valley Boys, Los Skarnales and the John Sparrow at Fitzgerald's, Nov.27, 2004"

Now this is the kind of local show Houston could use more of: three of the best bands in town, from widely disparate genres, playing in front of new faces for a change. Rude boys, rednecks and mods can unite as Skarnales bring the barrio cumbia-ska-billy, Reefer and the RVB blaze up the Webb Pierce-style honky-tonk, and the Anglophiles in the John Sparrow jam out all the Kinks. Be there, and make sure you wear your shag haircut, your suspenders and your Stetson. -- John Nova Lomax

Saturday, November 27, at Fitzgerald's, 2706 White Oak Drive, 713-862-3838.

"Top Ten Houston Albums of 2004, John Nova Lomax, Houston Press Music Editor"

Top ten local CDs. For reasons I can't even explain or rationalize to myself, this year's top ten local CD rundown will be written in haiku form. So without further ado:

... Sean Reefer and the Resin Valley Boys, Texas Hill Country

Studebaker tunes,

steel, twang and grime a-plenty.

Yep, Hank done 'em this way. ...

"Sean Reefer and the Resin Valley Boys in the Houston Chronicle"

Reefer and the Boys have created a buzz
By JOEY GUERRA
For The Chronicle

...With those songs, Reefer and the Boys have steadily built a pretty big buzz on the local scene. The group combines classic country, western swing, bluegrass and a touch of rock 'n' roll for a wholly original sound....

...Reefer himself channels Hank Williams (the original), from his matter-of-fact delivery to his spot-on yodeling. The group even hosts a Hank Happy Hour every Thursday at the Big Top.

It's hard to believe Reefer previously spent his time drumming for the Crazy Kings instead of standing in front of a microphone. Good thing a few knowledgeable friends offered some advice.

"Wayne Hancock and Hank Williams III heard me sing when I was still drumming," Reefer says. "They kind of pushed me, telling me all the time I need to be singing myself. It inspired me to do it...."

...The Boys are averaging anywhere from eight to 12 gigs a month, an impressive number for a local act.

"I can spend all day moving musical equipment around, setting up, tearing down. At the end of the day I get 50 bucks, and I'm like, 'Yeah, that was great!'" Golden says. "I can spend all day sitting at a computer typing in numbers, come home with $100, but it's some of the most trying work.

"You're willing to do a lot more, I think, for music just because it treats you nice."

Smokin' Hot Country with Sean Reefer

Resin Valley Boys Keep it Country with Latest Album

Mark Williams
Music Editor

"We're unpolished country," says vocalist-guitarist Sean Raiford, a.k.a. Sean Reefer, of his hot Houston area band, the Resin Valley Boys. “I don’t like any of that stuff coming out of Nashville.” And for good reason: after all, it would seem that Music Row has all but forgotten legends like Webb Pierce, Bob Wills, Bill Monroe -- even Hank Williams.

The Resin Valley Boys -- Raiford, guitarist Johnny Roadhouse, snare drummer Neil LaCroix, steel guitar man Will Golden and fiddlers Maddie Olson and Jake Marchese -- have spent the last four years keeping alive that good ol’ barroom country sound, a two-steppin’ rockabilly sound that got the group named last year as Houston’s best country & western band.

“We’re a do-it-yourself band,” says Raiford; and the proof of that can be found in the band’s 2003 release, “Texas Hill Country,” a collection of original honky-tonk and western swing guaranteed to get you on the dance floor.

Currently, the band is working on a new album with a September release date. “It’s another do-it-yourself album,” says Raiford. “That’s the best way to do it. We just set up microphones and play.” Despite maintaining a sound that, ironically, doesn’t get you much consideration these days from country radio, the band is getting some airplay from satellite radio outlets like XM and stations in...Pennsylvania and New Jersey? “That’s the way it’s turned out,” says Raiford. “They really seem to like our music up there.”

After the release of the new album, Sean Reefer & the Resin Valley Boys, who have appeared onstage with such Texas legends as Asleep At The Wheel, Dale Watson and Wayne Hancock, and national acts like Dave Alvin & the Guilty Men and Junior Brown, plan to borrow a bus and hit the road...

Bio

Sean Reefer formed the Resin Valley Boys with the goal of bringing the sounds of classic country and western swing music back to a world that had forgotten how to two-step. Sean and the Boys quickly built a reputation as the swinginest band in Houston and in Texas, cementing that reputation with the release of their first full length album, "Texas Hill Country," in 2003. Their first nominations for Best C&W Act and Best New Act from the Houston Press Music Awards soon followed. Since then, Sean Reefer and the Resin Valley Boys have appeared onstage with such Texas legends as Dale Watson, Wayne Hancock, and Asleep at the Wheel, and national acts like David Allen Coe, Deke Dickerson, Dave Alvin and the Guilty Men, Scott Biram, Big Sandy and his Flyrite Boys, and Junior Brown.

In 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008 and 2009 Sean and the Boys received nominations for Best C&W Act from the Houston Press Music Awards, winning the prestigious title in 2005 and 2006. In 2006, the boys played a coveted showcase slot at the Americana Music Conference in Nashville, Tennessee. In 2007 and 2008 the band won a AMMA award and two GMMA awards for songs off the Texas Hill Country Album.

Sean has been busy singing all over the great state of Texas ever since, winning new fans in every honky-tonk, dancehall, and lounge he and the Boys play in. Currently, they are in the studio recording material for a forthcoming, brand new full length release. Watch for them soon in your town. And bring your dancin' shoes; they'll wear 'em out for you soon enough.
