"Album Review"

'Bag of Bones' the debut album by The Resistance is released on the 15th of May and this blogger has been sent a promo copy. 'Bag of Bones' is this week's reviewed album.

Bag of Bones is a substantial impressive debut album. The lyrics are engaging and in the main very catchy without being intrusive. The vocal melodies are pleasing on the ear and there's enough variation to keep the listener interested and wanting more. The strength of this album lies in the catchy radio friendly songs such as the single 'Show Me A World To Love', 'Spinning Tops' and the album closer 'Half The Burden'. Bell X1 and The Guggenheim Grotto comparisons are going to be made and I hear a lot of the Pearl Jam influence in their music. However this unveils a slight flaw I have with some of the rockier tunes such as 'The Water' and 'In Time'. I find myself urging an Eddie Vedderesque vocal from the pit of the stomach that fails to appear. I know it's superficial but I love the packaging!

Bag of Bones is an accomplished debut album; [9 out of 12] - 2 U I Bestow

"Pick of the fortnight"

"The Resistance are a self-styled "folk-pop" trio from Dublin whose sound, they claim, is based on two "complimentary" guitars, although they don't state which kind person gave these instruments to them.Their EP is very impressively packaged and produced, and 'To Have And To Hold' has lots of interesting sounds to keep the ears glued, benefiting from classy harmonies and excellent vocalists generally. 'Show Me A World To Love' proves that the first track wasn't a fluke. The fine double-bass playing gives it real body and the harmonies again are spot on. 'In Time' sees them shift up a gear, even using drums, by golly! The Resistance are far more challenging then their own description of themselves as folk-poppers might allow you to think, for this is intelligent, lovingly-crafted music delivered with style and panache" - Hot Press

Bio

There are few bands out there that write intelligent music. There are few bands that come up with perfect harmony lines that capture your attention immediately. But when the right ingredients come to play and a right meeting of minds, there are no boundaries. This band began with a meeting of minds -“Rob and Dave” wrote all these well thought and crafted songs at home. Next came the additional musicians to give it new dimensions. Thus making up The Resistance. With a number of accolades already on their belt (Pick of the Week on Phantom FM, Pick of the Fortnight in Hotpress Magazine and numerous radio support Nationwide) the band have just completed their debut album (Bag of Bones).

Their fine musical texture, which is very hard to find nowadays in new bands, is a very important part of this debut Album- comprised of Rob Mc Donnell, David Patterson, Eanan Patterson, Rob Allen, Diarmuid Breathnach a collection of instruments which make their way onto the record (double bass, Guitar, Violin, Keys, electronica, and glockenspiel. There's even a salt cellar in there somewhere!).

Show me a World to Love is their first Single, released on St. Valentine’s day (Feb 14th 2009). They also embark on a nationwide tour that will see additional dates added. They have a keen following and aim at reaching every part of Ireland this year. They have supported the likes of Cathy Davey recently and we will see more supports like these popping up in the months ahead. They have a list of live radio sessions booked in from RTE radio to the likes of WLRFM & KCLRFM and right around the Nation. So tune in your radio to your favourite station. You can try to ‘resist’ the temptation to listen to their music but Adam & Eve wouldn’t approve of that now would they.
